Course on how to manage personal finances?

Does such a thing exist and can anyone recommend one?

i have a friend who is successful in an academic career and very bright. But her lack of knowledge of how to manage her personal finances amazes me, and I would say that I’m hardly an expert myself! It just doesn’t interest her in any way. She says she has no idea how her mortgage works and just keeps all her money in a bank account. I’d say she’s financially comfortable but not wealthy and earns a decent salary for the field she works in. We’ve talked about it and she’s open to learning more but doesn’t know where to start.

I'm surprised they are an intelligent academic but don't understand how a mortgage works. There's a free course online called Rebel finance, but you may want to look at some more basic explanatory videos about mortgages etc first. Martin Lewis' website might be a good start. Good luck!

Yes, how can you get a mortgage without understanding how it works?

She's financially comfortable but does she have a pension? Does she have anything to fall back on if she loses her income?

She could learn a lot by listening to the Martin Lewis podcast and also the Meaningful Money podcast. Pete Matthew, who does MM, also now features with his 20 something DD on Instagram @ bankofdadshow which is designed to be a good quality source of personal finance information for the social media generation.

Both the above have excellent websites with all the information you need to know about personal finance and investing. Both also have personal finance courses. The MSE one is free but the MM is paid for, but is more about investing and financial planning.

If your friend wants a systematic 'to do' list of what she might have missed out on, eg getting the best return on her money even if in the first instance it is just saving in a cash ISA (if she does literally have loads of money in her current account, just get her to put £20k in a cash ISA before Sunday and another £20k in from Monday onwards so she gets a good tax free return on her money) she could look at the financial flow chart:

The UK Personal Finance Flowchart - UKPersonalFinance Wiki

There was a series on MM that went through each step in detail:
