Sorry not interested to hear from those who have inherited big family wealth and huge deposits for their homes as of course that makes life much easier.
But if you have a “normal” job and maybe DC, interested to hear what is your financial situation? How much money do you have saved and what about pensions/mortgage etc

I’ll start: DH and I are late 30s, we live in London and have £8K in savings only. This is mainly because we have bought our first home last year and have spent almost all our savings for the deposit and solicitor, stamp duty etc. Have a huge mortgage (£470K) although a small and modest home because it’s London. 1 DC in school, still pay for a bit of wrap around care but nothing compared to the full time nursery bill we had for years.
We didn’t have any family help as we don’t come from wealth.
Own an old car outright.
Both have private pensions with work but only started these 8 years ago or so.

I’m late 30s, hubby early 40s. We have a mortgage over 300k and two children, 1 primary age and 1 secondary. We’ve only managed to properly start saving in the last couple of years. We have about 10k spread over bonds, Isa’s and in gold&silver. We’re also overpaying our mortgage at £100 a month, which seems very little but will hopefully save us money in the long-term.

Mid30, husband late 30s.
just got on the property ladder this year. (£215k mortgage- in the north

we have a teenage son who doesn’t live with us 18 (step son)
my son 16 lives with us
and a toddler between us

we have about £4k in saving. We are still finding our feet with the house and the plan is to use some for new carpets

Midlifeeemumma · 30/03/2026 17:17

I'm 42 husband 50. We have 30k in accessible savings. Pensions are over 300k. House has 200k left on it and now valued around 850k.

ChefsKisser · 30/03/2026 17:19

Two 35 year olds with DC age 8 and 6. About 13k in savings currently, mortgage 328k but house worth 680k. Currently paying off cc for 1 month travelling last year but then can save £1500 odd pcm. We live frugally compared to friends and dont spend much.

Littletreefrog · 30/03/2026 17:20

Early 40s we have £2k in savings and have a loan and a mortgage. For the first time in our lives we are actually putting some money away each month only a small amount but hopefully it means in a year when we need to pay for DS2s driving lessons we can do it without putting it on the credit card

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 30/03/2026 17:21

Hahabonk · 30/03/2026 14:56

About 600k.

I would also be interested in the context behind this.

Caplin · 30/03/2026 17:22

At that age I had £25k debt. Bouncing around credit cards and loans.H didn’t have any real debt but equally only enough savings for holidays. My pension was rubbish, maybe £45k.H was a bit better as he earned more and had no maternity leave eating it up.

We did have a mortgage and bugger all equity thanks to a housing crash after we bought.

I know you said no inheritance stories, but that was our turnaround. Two inheritances cleared the debt, did up the house and went into investments and savings. I also moved work a few times and my wages and pension went up.

I was freaking out about the future in my late 30s, but everything feels more stable ten years on.

Jiski · 30/03/2026 17:22

No savings, but we have about £300k equity in the house which will be paid off next March.

We’ve always overpaid the mortgage and not done any expensive renovations.

Morepositivemum · 30/03/2026 17:23

Married, 4 kids, he’s on a decent wage I’m mw and we have Zero, lucky in that we own our house, but we had the car and heating break down at Christmas and it took everything (about 8k euro). Now in arrears on a few bills as a result too.

MooMoo74 · 30/03/2026 17:27

Non. 32 years old.

hntr · 30/03/2026 17:30

36 YO here… I have less than £1k savings and about £20k in loans and debt! This is the best I have been for over 15 years

DH is 38 has £6k savings and £0 debt as he worked hard to pay it off last year (which I am so proud of!) so we are working jointly on paying off my debt

I am now 6 weeks pregnant and worry the paying off debt will have to take a backseat whilst we build our family! ☺️

SoftandQuiet · 30/03/2026 17:30

At that age, none. Did degree late 30's, got a good job, paid off debts and finally was able to start saving.

Mumstheword1983 · 30/03/2026 17:32

Hardly any. We save around £800 monthly but we spend it on Christmas and an annual holiday so it's never permanently there. We do have a lot of equity in the house and I have an emergency car fund normally sitting at around £500 we add monthly to it and use it as and when required. We don't really save for a rainy day. Good pensions for the future. 42 and 44. 4 children. Children have savings that we pay £30 a month into and we can't touch it until they are adults.

ByPinkOP · 30/03/2026 17:33

Not dissimilar to you. Late 30s. Just above average incomes for both me and DH. Contribution based pension through employer - only had it for the last 10 years, so not much in it really.
£270k mortgage (West Mids) and have owned a little bit longer then you OP. Roughly £30k in bank. 2 kids who are a bit older

DoubleEspressoForMe · 30/03/2026 17:36

Single Mum here. Around 10k. I've just had to stump up 3.5k after writing my car off unfortunately. I've tried to be very disciplined.

GlasgowGal2014 · 30/03/2026 17:37

Mid-late 30s was when my savings were at their lowest. Paying for a wedding, a house deposit, followed by two lots of maternity leave, then nursery fees, went part-time and then my car packed in. Now I'm in my mid-40s my kids are a bit older so we spend less on childcare, I've been promoted at work and now work full-time again so I am building my savings back up.

Haribosweets · 30/03/2026 17:37

Zero club here too. Mids 40s - early 50s 1 DC.

Girasoli · 30/03/2026 17:41

Late 30s, 2DC. Less than £2000.
The DC have more in their kids savers!

We bought our first house last year and have been slowly doing it up, so most of our savings went on the deposit and the rest on materials (did most of the work our selves) or trades people.

I find it a bit anxiety inducing having so little in my savings account and am trying to slowly build it up again.

Jafferz · 30/03/2026 17:41

Both mid forties. One DC in primary. Massive mortgage (on a 3 bed terrace we bought 5 years ago) as we're in London. One car we own outright - bought used.

We have about 100k in savings and investments not including pensions.

Our mortgage frightens me. We can easily afford the repayments, and overpay a bit, but paying it off feels so far away and I really don't want to work this hard for that long.

northernballer · 30/03/2026 17:42

We're late 40s and have about £10k in savings, £500k in pensions and a mortgage of £300k which is about 50% LTV. No debt.

I'm happy with our pensions but we are in a very precarious position with our liquid savings as that's not 6 months expenses. Still we're doing what we can to up them.

user1476613140 · 30/03/2026 17:44

No incentive to save really if you're on UC so we ran our savings we did have into home improvements. It's all gone now. We might have £800 in savings if we're lucky. Own home and car outright.

MrsHGWells · 30/03/2026 17:44

We recently brought in ‘24 and stamp duty on top of large mortgage, insurance, school fees and cost of living and a few house maintenance issues.. our savings are drained thanks to this greedy govt. We are only saving a bit atm as emergency back up.

Northcoastmama · 30/03/2026 17:46

Technically in savings about 5k but we still own our houses from before we were married with equity of approx £300k

Spare10k · 30/03/2026 17:47

Not in London. Entirely shared finances. Roughly same across accounts. Early 40s.

No mortgage. 💸
£750k in ISAs
£800k in pensions
£50k in current accounts

Long term investing, over paying mortgage, flipped primary home.

Inherited £80k 15 years ago. No other family wealth / connections but recognise we were very fortunate to receive anything. Won’t inherit anything else.

Read a book called ‘Your Money or Your Life’ in my 20s. Highly recommend.

Northcoastmama · 30/03/2026 17:48

Sorry that’s a lie, my mum just transferred me 30k which is now in Isa’s but before that no family money. We also own our home with £200k equity
