If someone’s tax code is 1145N
How much a month can they earn before paying tax please?

That’s a tax free allowance of £11,450 a year so any more than that and you’ll pay tax on the amount over that.

If you ask ChatGPT that may help?

Bromptotoo · 08/03/2026 13:16

As above.

Free pay in each month should be £11450/12.

£954 per month. (add a zero to the end of your tax code instead of a letter and divide by 12 months on the year).

as the tax year is finishing in a couple of weeks you will be issued a new tax code.

is this the new or old one?

It’s 2025/2026 code

so, would I pay tax as soon as the new tax year starts or does it start after I’ve earned £11450?

im not sure how it works and I’ve just started a new job

Why does she need AI when the question has been answered by a human? I despair that people will lose the ability to to do anything without AI

How much are you going to be earning @BrendaSmall? Tax will operate the same way as it does in your current job, you get your tax free pay monthly as you go along not all at once until you've used it up

Halfblindbunny · 10/03/2026 20:59

You will pay tax monthly on anything above your monthly tax free allowance. The N indicates you have transferred some of your personal allowance to your husband/wife so if you will be earning more than £12570 you should contact HMRC to cancel the marriage allowance claim

I can do it without AI but to be fair OP would have had an answer in seconds rather than typing it up here and waiting for an answer

A 2025/26 code is for the current tax year until April. You’ll get a new code for next year shortly.

We done the married tax allowance when I was working 10 hours a week many years ago 2001!
it was absolutely horrendous!
i would have to pay the tax people money and then they would send my husband a cheque, this happened for quite a few months!
Im not sure I can be doing with the hassle of cancelling it.
My basic monthly income should be around £1000 in my new job, but I’m planning on picking up extra hours that’s always available
