Last night we paid some extra to our mortgage provider. When will it show up as received?

We paid a few grand to the Halifax to bring our mortgage down a bit. The money exited our bank, but our mortgage sum hasn't gone down in the Halifax App. Does it take a couple of days, especially on weekends? Just a bit concerned, it's the first time we've did this.

When you make your normal mortgage payments how long does it take to show on your mortgage balance? I am pretty sure mine takes a few working days at least to update, maybe a week (different bank though). I would follow up if the balance doesn't update by next Friday.

The Direct Debit goes out on the 1st, but I've never checked my mortgage balance thereafter in all honesty, so I wouldn't know..

Mine would show Monday morning.

mindtheGAAP · 07/03/2026 19:26

With mine it takes a working day, so I think yours will show on Monday!

SeaDragon17 · 07/03/2026 19:30

Don’t panic! It does take a few days. We recently paid off our mortgage and the panic when it took 3 days to show was real!

Eileen101 · 07/03/2026 19:32

I'm with thr Halifax and it is normally the next working day for an overpayment to show up.

GardenCovent · 07/03/2026 19:35

If it was after close of business it won’t be processed until Monday and should be reflected on your outstanding mortgage balance overnight.
Please don’t panic op, providing you checked the sort code, account no and reference it should all go through fine. On the app it always checks the payee details you’ve input match the account name

It showed up on the App by Tuesday. One more question, though. If we paid more and the mortgage owed has gone down, how come the length of the mortgage and the monthly amount owed have stayed the same? Surely one of them would change if we owed less?
Any advice on that?

Each lender will be different but sometimes they don’t update unless you’ve over paid by more than 6 months of payments until the next renewal of rate.

It's the Halifax, and it was almost seven months' worth of payments.

Check your terms, but with my Halifax one, unless you specifically ask, they keep the term the same. They then adjust your monthly payments around the anniversary of you taking out the mortgage, to take account of any overpayments you may have made in the previous year.

Thanks, that's helpful as well.

Your payments will remain the same.
If you want to reduce the term you will need to call mortgage servicing and, if allowable at the present time, they can adjust your monthly payments.
TBF most customers do don’t change the term, what they do is reduce the balance, then keep their payments the same so that eventually your balance is cleared before the term expires.
The benefit of doing it this way is that if something unexpected happens you are not committed to the shorter term.
But I would give them a call and they will go over your options

Ineedanewsofa · 13/03/2026 14:17

We overpay an amount monthly on our Halifax mortgage, they adjust the repayment amount down every 12 months when we tick over to the next year of the mortgage. I keep what I pay the same so the DD payment is less and the overpayment is more.
We were aiming to take 10 years off the term this way but with everything getting more expensive it’ll probably be more like 7. Still worth it though!
