Panicking- dh has paid a large amount off old credit card but they've changed their banking details

Dh had a cc with a large balance. He's taken out a consolodation loan to pay the balance off. He paid via internet banking using the details he uses for the monthly standing order. The last standing order went through at the end of Feb with no problem.

He made the payment after 5pm last night. Credit card haven't recieved it. The cc company have said that their sort code and account number have changed over a year ago. They hope it will go through but i'm worried as it's an awful lot of money. Dh has spoken to the bank who have said to call back tomo if it hasn't gone through.

Does anyone have any experience of this please? Will the payment go through as the standing orders have been?

This happened to us a couple of months ago. We had a bit of a panic but the money was back in our account the following day.

Thank you for replying, did it go back to your current account or off the credit card. We're hoping it will go through like the standing orders have been doing and will pay off the credit card. I'm so scared.

There is zero difference in the way a SO is paid and the way a one off payment is paid.

If the Sort Code, Ac Num and ref are all the same then if the SO payments are received, so will this one be...unless there's been a change since the last SO payment was made.

Didn't he ask why hos SO payments have continued to be received if these details supposedly changed a year ago?

Nmss · 05/03/2026 18:34

100% he's grey and has shown me all the banking apps to check sort codes etc. He's currently on the phone to the current account bank again to make sure he's doing the right thing waiting. I used to work for telephone banking when i was at uni, i'm not confident in them. @Quiettrump

Would you wait until tomo or ask for a recall please?

The money came back into our current account. This was a one-off payment. We have a dd for the monthly payment so don’t notice that the account details had changed as we don’t make one-off payments that often.

There are lots of stories online of people in similar situations and I think they all had a happy ending.

If the details he's used match the SO then I would absolutely leave it be. Check how long the last SO payment took to credit...this will be the same.

Trying to recall a Faster Payment invites all kinds of fuckery, multiple depts over two banks involved and IME a high risk of human error or delay. Only to be done as a last resort.

Is it a standing order he pays or a direct debit?
If the account details he has paid to matches the ones he normally pays to then the payment should reach them.

Credit card payments can take longer to be credited as everyones credit card payments to that company are firstly paid into 1 big holding account (the sort code and account number) and then they get paid to the individual credit cards using the long card number you input as a reference.

Thank you, i appreciate the advice.

The current account bank have if it hasn't gone in by midday tomo to call their global banking team and gave a direct number rather than going through the automated service.

I agree about human error, thankyou again.

Don't listen to them.

As a pp mentioned, cc payments are first paid to one big holding account and then allocated individually to the relevent card number provided as a reference.

How long this allocation takes is due to the receiving bank, not the sending one. If the sending bank have given you a timescale of midday tomorrow they're talking out of their arse...they have no control over this.

Look at all your previous SO payments and the difference between date sent and date received. THAT'S your timescale after which you need to do something, not when the sending bank tell you - it's beyond their control.

Thank you. I looked at December as worst case. It looks like it takes one or two days.

I meant worst case due to bank hols as so goes on 24th.

Thank you all for your replies. We're both slowly coming down off the ceiling.
