What do you do when you have no boiler, can't afford one and you have bad credit?

In typical fashion my boiler broke. I need a new one. It's been condemned and I can't use it. My husband (ex) severely destroyed my credit and I can't be accepted for any of the pay monthly plans. I've tried literally every website. A new one is at least £1800. I don't even have 18 pence. What am I supposed to do? I have a child in the house. I've recently left my job due to sight issues and I'm on universal credit and PIP but I only bring in maybe 1200 a month if that. I'm stressing and I don't know what to do

Are there any credit unions or Friendly Societies in your area. These type of establishments loan money.

Coffeeandbooks88 · 05/03/2026 13:41

My husband is in debt management. We managed to get pay monthly loan from Barclays to get a new boiler. You might be able to get credit.

Look at whether your energy company can do anything. Some of them have schemes for replacing old/broken boilers

Tiptopflipflop · 05/03/2026 14:17

You may well be able to get a grant to cover the replacement boiler. See here for some of the main ones https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/family/housing-and-energy-grants/

Sell and move?

BreezyOrca · 05/03/2026 16:53

I work in West Yorkshire. If you feel comfortable to tell me which Local Authority you live in I can advise you further. I'd suggest speaking to Leeds Credit Union, but there's also potential support from councils too - if you don't want to share any more details (I totally understand please either speak to Citizens Advice or call your council for advice.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 05/03/2026 16:59

No advice but want to wish you well op.

Your ex husband is a useless twat, and you will be okay. This will seem impossible now and so tough, but reach out to whoever you can. Mn is helpful in a crisis, and there are usually always places to turn for help when you're on your own with kids

You will be okay. Ive been at rock bottom on my own, and I know it must feel impossible. But you can do this, and you will get through.

❤️

I would talk to Christians Against Poverty - you don’t have to be Christian. They will help you to reschedule your debt or negotiate with lenders to freeze interest, they can also initiate something called breathing space to allow you to get your head together.

they can also access Acts 365 - a charitable organisation that can help with one-off costs.

Sell and move?

Do you really think if the OP can’t afford a boiler for £1800 that she can afford buying and selling costs to move house? Seriously.

Sell and move?

And in the mean time?…

ChoosingMyOwnRandomUsername · 05/03/2026 18:48

My ex took out loans and all sorts in my name, defaulted them and proceeded to vanish into thin air

Have you reported this to the Police and the lenders? If you weren't involved in taking the lending there's an excellent chance they'll simply be written off (and credit impact deleted).

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 05/03/2026 18:52

Pretty sure you can't sell a house with a broken boiler unless sold as seen,it's one of the things our solicitor wanted proof of when we moved.

There's a scheme for people on low income - found these details below:

The Affordable Warmth Scheme is part of ECO.
A new ECO scheme started on 1st April 2017 which offered boiler grants and storage heater grants to low income households who receive means-tested State Benefits.
Boiler Grants provide funding for qualifying householders to replace old, faulty and inefficient central heating boilers with new modern energy efficient A rated boilers.

To Qualify for a Boiler Grant you must satisfy ALL 3 of the following criteria:
1. You must live in your own home.
2. You must receive one of the following State Benefits:

  • Guaranteed Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Universal Credit
  • Income Support
  • Income-Related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income-Based Job Seeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Severe Disablement Allowance
  • Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit
  • Child Benefit (subject to maximum household income thresholds)
  • War Pensions Mobility Allowance
  • Constant Attendance Allowance
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment
3. You must have a broken mains gas central heating boiler fitted in your home at the time of your free ECO Survey.

Looks like you would qualify - you own your home, receive UC, and have a broken boiler. This company do it in West Yorkshire (https://www.invictusenergygroup.co.uk/apply) - I'm sure there are others though!
