HELP!!!

Hello lovely folks! Please help I am feeling very anxious after logging into my banking app to see a pending transaction 'CHAPSINTREF2026' for a credit into my account for £3.35!!

I've heard about this as some sort of scam and now I'm worried. I've called my bank fraud line who told me to keep an eye on it. They weren't interested as it's not a debit from my account. I've frozen my card and ordered a new debit card. But I'm spiralling! What's going on? Has someone got my details? I definitely don't recognise the transaction, it's so odd and stressing me out! Any ideas what else I can do? I get paid tomorrow and feel like I will wake up to find my account has been wiped! Thank you in advance!

Looks like we have got the answer now, so funny that it's the same amount too!!

Glad it's nothing sinister! It is funny that I spoke to two different natwest people yesterday and neither could tell me what it was. Thank God for mumsnet! Have a good day all!

I had the same

I’m with NatWest too and had the same payment ref but for £3.12. So strange. This thread is the only thing I can see online about it. Glad it’s nothing to worry about.

I also had a similar small payment with the same reference and discovered this page in the process. Having done some research Natwest say this relates to a closed mortgage. Apparently when the mortgage began a £30 CHAPS fee (used to cover the cost of transferring funds) was added to the loan which mean interest was charged on the fee. Whilst the fee was correct there wasn't an option to pay it upfront or add it to the mortgage so to put things right Natwest are refunding the interest on the £30 along with compensatory interest calculated as simple interest at the average Bank of England base rate during the time this issue occurred plus one percentage point.

Nice of them to do this, but a bit of upfront explanation would have been appreciated!!

Ipsevenenabibas · 06/03/2026 14:28

Thank you for explaining that @Alwaysheld

I spoke to 2 Natwest employees and neither could explain what it was! I appreciate you posting here and sharing that - agree that Natwest really ought to have informed us though!

Thank you all for this, I too have had a payment today, mortgage with them was closed 5 years ago so would never have worked it out!!

Helen20202 · 17/03/2026 21:10

Thank you for this - I found a mysterious payment in my account too with the reference CHAPSINTREF2026. I tried NatWests online chatbot and googled it, I figured it was something to do with an old CHAPS payment but couldn’t think when, my mortgage was from 10 years ago so it didn’t occur to me to be that.

I had a similar payment the other day, but for £2.44. Also 32p "net interest" on the same day. Anyone else get that?

nathanbratfan · 24/03/2026 14:32

I had the exact same thing! Thank you mumsnet for existing and thanks everyone for the reassurance

Ohnotagainrose · 24/03/2026 14:35
