Have been offered a fab job, think I am going to be financially worse off,any tips?

I have been offered a job starting in Sept when my youngest starts school. I will be working school hours, no hols and training around school It will pay approx £500 a month but I will have to pay tax and NI out of that. I think my pay will also be subdivided so there is a litle bit of income in the hols.

I appreciate I will have no need of income support but as I will also loose my mortagage support I will be approx £500 worse of each month. Apparently I won't even qualify for working tax credit as I am working less than 16 hours. I don't want to claim benefits and really want to take this job as it could lead to so much more but am really worried about how I am going to manage. Any ideas, or tips?

Have you tried going on www.entitledto.co.uk or www.workingfamilies.org.uk to check exactly how your benefits will change when you're working?

I know a lot of people who think they're going to be worse off end up better off because of allowances for things like childcare, but that doesn't sound like it's going to be relevent. Your best best is to find out exactly how the pay will be divided (so you know how much you'll be earning each month, rather than over the entire year), and using the calculators on the two sites above to try to get an estimate. Bear in mind you should probably call each of the relevent agencies to confirm the benefits before taking the job if all looks ok, as it's not unheard of for the calculators to be wrong!

Will you be working more than 16 hours in the term time. As WTC take this as you average hours not your average over the whole year.
