Which is the best supermarket to work for - hourly rate and staff discounts

I've often wondered if it would work out better if you spent a LOT on grocery shopping - if you took a part time job at a supermarket. Would hourly rate + staff discounts work out better for income/costs. iykwim?

Who do you work for and what rate and discount do you get?

tesco staff over 12 months - 10%
sainsbos - 10% 6 months

now you google

TracyK · 16/06/2008 10:49

You mean you have to work there for 6-12 months before discount kicks in?

Thought it'd be more discount than that - drat - I always wonder as I hand my credit card over for £20ish every other day - if I'd be better off working there!

Tesco discount is capped at £600 per year (I think). They did have save as you earn schemes and shares but I'm not sure what the situation is now.

Waitrose is supposed to be good as it's part of the John Lewis group so I think you get discounts there too (although I may be wrong).

I have heard that Asda are a very good company to work for.

LOL - not very helpful, sorry

I used to work for Sainsbury's years ago when I was at school/uni - used to get 20% discount after 3 months - You used to get to cards too so could give one to dh or mum or whoever worked really well but think its not such a good deal anymore!

katylou25 · 16/06/2008 12:28

two!

Collision · 16/06/2008 12:29

it has changed to 6 months at Sains now!

3littlefrogs · 16/06/2008 12:30

waitrose are very good employers.

ruddynorah · 16/06/2008 12:31

m&s 20% unlimited discount from day 1 plus staff shop selling 'whoops' food for quarter price or less.

Second M&S - 20% discount, and 75% off on food going out of date (at the end of the day in most stores, as well as staff shop). Also quite good pay, from what I remember...

TracyK · 16/06/2008 13:07

But I spose M&S is 20% more expensive to start with....

Bloody M&S never want staff where we live - I sooo want to work there or Waitrose but the nearest would mean me spending all my wages on petrol!

I am waiting for the M&S Simply Food Store near us to ring me though and have everything crossed that the roumour that they are going to open a waitrose in Chelmsford is true?

I need to get a little job soon so this is sooo helpful!

I would disagree that Asda is a good store to work for - DH does and they have very little regard for their staff in general. They do offer 10% off shopping but policy on sick-pay and sick-leave is very poor. I thought Waitrose might be better - we have one opening nearby soon, but they seem to only be paying an hourly rate on or just above the minimum wage.

Pannacotta · 16/06/2008 15:18

Waitrose, since you are a partner of the John Lewis/Waitrose partnership you take a profit share bonus each year which is usually pretty good I have heard. Also discounts are good and apply to JL as well as Waitrose so you can save on all your shoppping, not just food.

Lidl pay up to £8 per hour and I think Aldi are similar.
