Any tax experts out there?!

I was wondering if anyone could help - my tax code was 1257L for years, then it changed to 936T when I started earning over 100k. However, now one year later it’s back at 1257L (still earning over 100k).

I’m hesitant to call HMRC in case they say something has been wrong for years and whip hundreds of pounds from my pay! Does anyone have any insight into how codes work?

Thx so much

1257 is the standard tax code. The 936 code was to reclaim underpaid tax.

You must have owed £1284 from the year before.

Thank you! This might a dozy question but how does that happen if I’m PAYE?

Do you have any benefits in kind? (eg cycle to work plan, company car, expenses paid that aren't tax deductible?
Or did you have any other income - interest from savings for example? Or dividend payments?

For every £2 you earn over £100k, your tax code is reduced by £1.
