What are UC/DWP job centre officials like?

I've got an appointment with the DWP next month. To say I'm bricking it is an understatement.

I have no idea what to expect and the warnings of failing to comply with them results in criminal prosecution is getting to me. I have declared everything truthfully but I'm still worried.

I've been asked to fill in a form A64A but they haven't supplied it. I have asked for them to supply a link, failing that I'll pop into the JC before the appointment to pick one up. I know it is to do with owning property, which I'm due to move back into. I have told them this.

I've had such a shit start to this year I'm just really worried about what they are going to say. I wasn't expecting to ever have to claim UC again. I didn't need to see an agent in the past so have no benchmark. Are experiences generally ok with DWP?

I've found that they are are often stressed and overworked, and easiest to deal with if you have straightforward circumstances where they can tick a box and send you on their way (no issues for my disabled DS who has LCWRA and got PIP without an appeal)., or when I was a lone parent with no requirement to seek work. The best approach then is to turn up whenever required and nod along and be in and out as quick as possible.

They are often poorly trained and don't understand some of the more complex/less common legislation (which sounds like your case) and then can put pressure on inappropriately. The best thing you can do is to get external advice and read up on the legislation yourself.

Just to update this in case anyone finds themselves in the same position.

DWP were fine with me, took all my information and told me that the decision maker would be in contact. I had that yesterday and my property value is being disregarded together with the tax I owe on my property income for six months. That gives me enough time to get back in and do my tax return, pay my tax and then I assume it will trigger a payment from UC.

Thank you for everyone who commented. It has been a very stressful 2026 so far and this has eased things.
