deposit should I pay in advance? I just think, what if they went bust and I lost my money?! It's over 3 grand for all the work.

gosh, that seems a lot. When we had ours done (it cost over 3 grand as well), we did pay a deposit but it was nowhere near that amount - more like 10% I think. I don't think I'd be happy with 50% tbh.

We had a new boiler a couple of months agos , got a few quotes ,none asked for money up front.

MarmadukeScarlet · 11/06/2008 23:30

If you get a combi boiler there used to be grants you could get to help pay for it.

emkana · 11/06/2008 23:30

We'll probably need a new boiler, does it really cost over 3 grand????

paddingtonbear1 · 11/06/2008 23:32

emkana it depends what you have done. Just the boiler doesn't cost so much. Its when you need extra pipework, radiators replacing.. we had the lot!!

beingpositive · 11/06/2008 23:32

I would never pay a deposit to that amount get some other quotes and compare

CaptainUnderpants · 11/06/2008 23:39

emkana - when we had quotes for boilers the price that differed was the cost of labour . When you decide what boiler you wnat the cost will not or should not vary that much from pplace to plcae but the cost of labour can.

our quotes for labour varied from £500 to £2K.

One guy said that it would take three days to fit etc . In the end we had it done in a day .

MarmadukeScarlet · 11/06/2008 23:41

This was not the specific one I was thinking of, but look here warm front grants

ipanemagirl · 11/06/2008 23:42

Thanks for feedback, we need a new pipe to the boiler, complicated rerouting of pipe, new overflow out of the building, work to take the flue up and away from the building rather than right into ds's bedroom, so quite a lot of work. Most of the quotes have been in that ballpark. Wish it was just a simple replacement! British Gas quoted over 5 grand!

It depends on so much emkana!

Dont go with British Gas ! Charge way over the odds as you have already seen.

Go with a Corgi registered engineer , recommedation is always best .

getmeouttahere · 12/06/2008 21:23

We just had a new boiler plus valves fitted on all radiators.

It cost £2.25k.

We were just invoiced after the event when we were happy with it. No money changed hands upfront.
