Speeding fine and points - will it affect my insurance?

How awful - I have been caught by a speed camera going a bit too fast . It serves me right I know, but will it affect my insurance. (First offence in 14 years of driving, three points/£60 fine). Anyone know?

Yes, your premium might go up a bit, shouldn't be too much though.

expatinscotland · 07/06/2008 23:24

Might not for just the one offense and 3 points.

yes, i work in insurance. some companies will charge more than others.......

ChippyMinton · 08/06/2008 19:58

You must tell your insurance co.
A colleague had his car written off recently. He hadn't told his insurer about the points, which would've put his premium up by 25%. They are now withholding 25% of his claim, which is an awful lot more than the increased premium.

Thanks. I haven't actually been 'convicted' yet but have no defence!! So if I do get the points I will own up and tell the insurance company pronto!

I got 3 points in April 2003.

Phoned insurance company and told them, made no difference to that year but added £140 to my premium when I re-newed in the August. However I was only 22 at the time so I think I was classed as high risk!

I've also known people, older than I was, getting points but get very little added to their premium, so wouldn't worry to much (no offence but guess you're not 22 from the fact you've been driving for 14yrs )

Ha - no, add 10 years to that age and you're there!

I had a speeding offence which was 40 in a 30 limit (one of those bloody annying aones where its just about to become dual carriageway and the road wdens but they increased the speed limit - I think it subsidises the Brighton council Xmas dinner every year) and 3 points. Had no affect on my insurance. I hthink higher speed/more points might though.

LadyMuck · 11/06/2008 23:30

It depends in part on how your offence is recorded - an SP30 flags up as a smaller risk than an SP60 although both offences could be detected by a speed camera.

laurz75 · 13/06/2008 21:59

Thanks all. It was a 30mph limit and I was going 41. The annoying thing is that as kewcumber says it was also a dual carriageway and I was shocked I hadn't seen the signs. When I travelled that way again, I saw that the signs had been defaced and you couldn't see the numbers! I did feel slightly better. A policeman friend says its not worth appealing and anyway the signs have now been sorted out so I have no evidence.
