Help, missed the online deadline for various reasons
How easy / simple is it to complete the paper return ? Or is it better to just let them collect via your salary tax …
Have never done this before , first time claiming
Any Tips pointers appreciated- thanks

For which tax year? 23/24?

Trillie44 · 15/11/2025 21:50

Child benefit tax return deadline, when is it, I thought was end of the year??

LIZS · 15/11/2025 21:52

Online by the end of January following the end of the tax year.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 15/11/2025 22:02

Huh? Tax returns are due by the end of January or by end of December if you want them to collect it via your tax code.

Sassy31 · 15/11/2025 22:22

for 24/25 - I thought online returns were 31/10? For child benefit
is the paper process smooth - so have till end of Jan that ?

I didn't think you could do paper tax returns anymore, I think you're mixing your dates up unless there's a reason you don't get the standard deadline of 31 Jan

ThatAlertLilacFinch · 15/11/2025 22:30

The deadline is 31 January 2026 so you’ve still got plenty of time. If you want them to collect the tax liability via PAYE (if they can) you have to submit before 30 December.

You'll need to apply for a UTR asap if you’ve not already got one. The deadline was 5 October but I’ve never known a penalty to be issued for applying late! They can take a while to come through though.

MidnightPatrol · 15/11/2025 22:30

I think you mean you have missed the registration deadline for self-assessment (which is October?).

Call HMRC.

Sassy31 · 16/11/2025 17:00

I’m so confused ….
thank you all , will ring HMRC for clarification.
tomorrow .

What’s UTR? Thanks

What’s UTR? Thanks

You need a UTR to submit Self Assessment Tax Returns.

Go online fill out an SA1 you will be issued a UTR (they never really apply penalties for registering late)

Once you have your UTR you have until January 31st 2026 to complete the return for Year ended 5 April 2025.

If you want to have the High Income Child Benefit Charge taken through PAYE rather than you paying it in one lump sum then submit the return by the 30th December.

Sassy31 · 16/11/2025 17:32

Thank you

Hello!
I'm in a similar position although I registered in time but I didn't realise my husband needed to as well to pay back high income tax!
Going to try and contact the HMRC tomorrow but it's so hard to manage to speak to someone! Apparently the online chat is quite helpful!

shuffleofftobuffalo · 16/11/2025 21:23

31 oct is the deadline for paper tax returns (yes, they still exist) but you can do online until 31 Jan.
