How much do you spend on yourself per month?

This is to include clothing, cosmetics, hair, nails, coffees with friends, books or any hobby related things. I’m a SAHM with an 8, 6 and 5 month old. I have £100 per month to spend on myself and any coffees out etc, although this excludes gym session payments.

Well I also save and invest and spend money on the spawn, but having a bit more money to go around is one of the advantages of age. Also, knowing what really makes you feel well and happy, and spending money on that, rather than on nights out you don’t enjoy with people you don’t much care about (misspent youth here!)

Easily £500 as that’s my fun money pot that is always used up. That also doesn’t include holidays, so is mostly skincare, beauty regimes, entertainment subscriptions, clubs and activities, coffees and take aways and any clothes etc.

But I have no kids and a high income so I have to spend it on someone ;)

I thought about £500 too and then you mentioned entertainment subscriptions. So another £200 maybe eek

Mondaytuesdayhappydays · 03/11/2025 22:15

Purely for ourselves - 625 each
Plus 150 and my monthly mileage- around 270- in a joint pot for meals / drinks out together.

CosySeason · 03/11/2025 22:16

Nothing really and it’s why I’ve been so down i think. I can afford it but not in the mood.

ShenandoahRiver · 03/11/2025 22:16

Probably £400 per month on average.

BigSkies2022 · 03/11/2025 22:18

Oh, that’s not right @CosySeason. I hope you get your mojo back soon.

Mintearo7 · 03/11/2025 22:28

£200 fun money budget here too. Clothes, yoga, self care stuff, work lunches, personal socialising, presents for DH but other presents are from another pot. I like to budget it so I don’t spend it all and treat myself to a yearly city break with the girls.

zazazaaar · 03/11/2025 22:34

Holidays with friends £100 a month
Socialising - £250 a month
Clothes/hair/make up/shoes -£50 a month.
I love going out. Not very interested in how I look though.

DoAWheelie · 03/11/2025 22:35

I don't buy any makeup or spend on my hair. Clothes I bulk buy new bits once a year or so and spend around £120 so £10 a month average. Meals/treats when out, maybe once a month and I'll spend £30ish.

I buy 1-2 new video games a month, sometimes they are £10 each, sometimes as high as £70 but usually only once or twice a year at that price. Probably average about £50 a month.

So total around £80 a month average. I have £120 available but I prefer to keep average costs low so I can build up a surplus over time to spend on special one off events. I went to a concert last month that was £85 and I wouldn't have been able to afford it if I spent my entire disposable income every month on smaller treats.

EveryDayisFriday · 03/11/2025 22:45

DH and I get £250pm each to spend on our own fripperies. I generally save it up or spend on hair/ beauty treatments.

FurnHollows · 03/11/2025 22:49

I don’t really keep count. Nails every 3 weeks, hair every 6 weeks, sometimes I go for a wash and blow dry if I’m going out as I can’t manage to do my hair myself at the moment. Botox/fillers whenever I need it, weekly facials, eyebrow touch up is yearly. I buy clothes when I see them or if I fancy something, it’s the same with makeup and skin care. Physio every week as I had an accident 6 months ago and a massage due to my injury every week. Specialist PT three times a week. Before my accident I went to the gym every two days, at the moment I can’t manage to get there but I’m still having to pay for membership as per the contract. Like others on this thread it’s not always been like this for me.

Varies enormously. Last month: pretty much spent nothing, was too busy to spend any money, and was volunteering for a week all expenses paid so saved money on food too. Did not go out anywhere other than where I was treated (1 evening meal), no coffees out, no meals out, no takeaways (I don't like them), no clothes needed, don't buy make up, do my own hair cuts, don't belong to any gym or do classes of any sort. September was not dissimilar on lack of spend, but I did buy a pack of socks and a belt (£22, trousers falling down due to weight loss).

This month is the opposite: motorbike needs some bits, which will come to £2-300. May also buy tyres (another £200+) and I've some stuff for another bike to pick up from the paint shop (£5-600), I'm out for 2 x brunch, 2 lunch, 1 afternoon tea and 3 evening meals all booked in so far and expecting more, and I'll likely spend a couple of hundred on Christmas presents, and I've spent £8.50 on a really nice jacket in a charity shop (it also said 'dry clean only' on label, but given it's mostly polyester it got turned inside out and hand washed - came out fine), I also have a basket of stuff at Joe Browns I'm debating on buying (£200), I do need stuff for going out, as I've shrunk in weight and I've nothing smart that fits well for a posh Christmas afternoon tea. I'm going shopping in London (will take train I think, parking is as much as the ticket!) to a specific shop for something (£50ish) and meeting a mate for lunch. Also I ordered a replacement blade for a mixer (£17), which I don't really need as such as I've alternatives, but it's handy to have.

On average it's never anywhere near as much as this month! I rarely buy clothes.

ninjahamster · 03/11/2025 23:04

I spent £30 on shein earlier this year for a few items of clothing.

I don’t really leave the house though so that’s about it. Don’t wear make up, have my hair or nails done. Not in any clubs or societies. No subscriptions, magazine deliveries.

I can’t think of anything else really. I play an online game and occasionally spend £5 on game credits but that’s maybe once or twice a year.

When was well and working, I spent much more.

CoastalCalm · 03/11/2025 23:36

I’ve got quite a big budget but rarely spend it , £1000 a month - October I spent £400 of which £100 was car insurance , phone etc and £80
for a new airfryer - rest of the bills come from joint account which is funded separately. The main factor is no kids unfortunately

hattie43 · 04/11/2025 01:41

I spend whatever I want . No budgeting needed

PrioritisePleasure24 · 04/11/2025 06:39

We aren’t married and no kids so no shared finances. I have around half my wage after bills. Large amount(for me) is saved into virtual pots but I give myself £600 ish for the month but am always left with leftovers which gets saved.

This goes on transport, work meals ( i mainly bring from home but have one a week bought) any toiletry and make up items, haircuts, clothes i need. Christmas, birthday and holiday savings. We do enjoy food out mainly brekkie or tea maybe fortnightly. I don’t spend a lot we don’t do high end etc and i use vinted etc. But money is defo not stretching as far.

I do feel this is because we are childfree. I’m not on a high wage at all but we have a low mortgage due to high deposit. It would be at least double what we pay.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 04/11/2025 07:09

Around £600ish, sometimes a bit more but I am single and my DD is an adult, she lives with me but works so has her own money, so I only really have myself to think about once all bills are paid.

I really wouldn’t class car insurance or an airfryer as personal spends! If that stuff counts you could add a zero to my number 🤪

WoahThreeAces · 04/11/2025 07:22

We have super strict budgeting in our household - a pot for everything 😀 the fun money pot for DH and I is £225 a month each. I generally save £75 of that to go towards things like a weekend away with friends once a year or meeting up with a uni buddy for the day where I have to travel on stupid expensive trains.
I feel lucky to have this much! I buy myself something every month, whether it's a new pair of earrings or an item of clothing etc.

TheCurious0range · 04/11/2025 07:32

I have around £700 a month disposable income but pay things like gym, Spotify, mobile out of that plus a few other things so probably have around £550 left. Some months I spend it some I don't. Last month I did but had a hen do and my mum's birthday present (I but for my parents birthdays DH for his, Christmas comes out of a separate Christmas pot for all family), this month I'm away for work twice and I bought be winter shoes, coat and a couple of pairs of jeans in September, I do have a haircut booked and just bought the n&s beauty advent but I'm unlikely to spend more than about £200. The rest will go into my fun money savings which is mine not family money and the bit I use for friend weekends away, gig tickets, more expensive purchases for me as and when I want them.
I earn well, DH actually just got another promotion so is catching me and we only have one DS. We get the same disposable income each each month after bills, savings family and ds spending is covered.

claudiawinklemansfringetrimmer · 04/11/2025 07:36

DH and I have £50 each “just for fun” money a month, although we’re not super strict with it- neither of us goes out with friends a lot but when we do go out for dinner or whatever that usually just comes out of the main budget. He spends his on Warhammer and vaping, mine is usually clothes or skin stuff.

popcornandpotatoes · 04/11/2025 07:44

Obviously varies massively as I don't get my hair done every month, don't buy new clothes every month etc. Never get my nails done. But I also don't have a budget. This month it will be nearly 1k as I have a spa weekend away planned next week (though technically already paid for over the last few months), also had my roots done last week, a meal out with friends etc. some months will be hardly anything though

Superscientist · 04/11/2025 10:31

Most months barely anything ... Under £50 a month.

I haven't been to a hairdressers in 15 years, I've never had my nails done or anything like that.
In the last 6 months I've bought a bed shirt and maternity t shirt from the supermarket and 2 second hand breastfeeding t shirts. I do need some new jeans and new boots but I've asked for money for birthday and Christmas to go towards this as there's nothing else I want/need and this would allow me to get better quality items.
I probably go out for coffee once a month around £10 for coffee and a cake.
I normally do a pilates class which is £6 a week but I have a newborn so haven't done that since the summer.

Me too.

Tried having a budget but it didn’t work, as no two weeks / months are the same for me, plus it took the joy out of being spontaneous.
