car insurance woes

TopazQuartz · 30/10/2025 12:30

car insurance currently so expensive. Been driving for 30 years, clean licence, drive to and from work, some work from home, just a ton of money going out every month.

Can I ask other's experiences? thanks

What are you driving?

Nourishinghandcream · 30/10/2025 13:00

So many things affect insurance premiums.
Age, driving history, address, parking location, annual mileage, model of car, voluntary excess etc..........
Are you checking on comparison sites or just sticking with the same insurer?

Ubugly · 30/10/2025 13:02

What car and how much is it worth? I have a small 2017 car and it was about £230 for the year with Tesco.

DamnitCarol · 30/10/2025 13:27

You need to be price checking and changing insurance providers every single year. It doesn’t pay to remain loyal, the price goes up and up

ThirdStorm · 30/10/2025 13:33

My insurance actually went down this year, first time in ages so I let it auto renew! Do you do the price checking with compare the market, etc? Good chance to check excess, cover, etc. I don't tend to buy breakdown with my insurance as have found it overpriced and I don't bother with a courtesy car (I have access to an alternative if ever needed). I also pay annually so not to pay extra but appreciate not everybody can manage that.

Have you looked at comparison websites ?

What type of vehicle ?

My partner has an old van £150 per year insurance, parked off road

SwarmsofLadybirds · 30/10/2025 17:02

How much are you paying? And what vehicle?

Someone else telling you they pay £200 isn't that helpful really - it's so dependent on a multitude of factors, not just previous claims. And if you're driving a brand new Range Rover , then yes, it's going to be expensive to insure.

You need to make sure you're shopping around for the best deal on comparison sites.

We have just ordered a new car. Current insurance around £350. Checked Direct Line which were always a good starting point, over £900. We nearly cancelled buying g a new car, but checked on Compare the Market, and have got the same cover for just under £400. Worth shopping round, loyalty costs money

But how much are you paying and what for exactly?

allmycats · 30/10/2025 19:01

My insurance on 23 plate Ford Puma mild hybrid ( in my 60s/live in Peak District) is £401 including breakdown insurance . Full no claims and car kept on drive. It actually went down a bit this time. Not the cheapest but with a big name reputable company.

NotANesbit · 31/10/2025 14:49

i had my renewal quote from current insurers, I did Quidco Compare Car Insurance, get £45 cashback from that and the insurer I opted for was £200 / year cheaper than current one

TopazQuartz · 01/11/2025 00:48

Thanks everyone, and I've managed to cut the cost in half from the comments here. Sorry I didn't go into depth but hellish day when I posted.

Glad to hear you sorted it, it really does depend a lot on the car you drive. My friend recently downgraded her BMW to a Ford and the insurance is a fraction of what it used to be!
