I changed jobs and my new pay day was 3 days earlier than last job so I was 1day out within assessment period and got no UC in sept and am now in rent arrears with a notice. The main part of my UC is housing allowance. I only get paid once a month so it’s ridiculous and I’m now off work with depression as can’t cope with stress of loosing home just before Christmas
they told me it can take 8 weeks
by which time I will be evicted

it’s an absolute joke

That sounds so stressful. You will get a larger payment this month though?

Lougle · 28/10/2025 00:05

Have you asked the Council for a discretionary housing payment?

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 28/10/2025 00:15

Has your landlord actually given you 2 months notice already ? is that what you mean by ' in rent arrears with a notice. '

Will you get full pay if you are off sick already in a new job ?

Why not try paying your rent with your wages and live off bread / pasta for the month / visit the food banks ?

Can you apply for an overdraft / get a credit card / pawn some jewellery / sell some jewellery / sell your car - anything to raise one month's rent
as I expect you have already considered asking any family you may have for help.

Does your new employer have any financial aid schemes ?

Hopefully you will get more UC this month OP. Can you speak to your landlord? One late rent payment shouldn’t result in immediate eviction, maybe you could explain what’s gone wrong?

Bromptotoo · 28/10/2025 02:36

Hard fact is that this is how UC works. Did you know that new job's pay day was different to the old one?

Can you ask them for an advance based on change of circumstances?

Lougle · 28/10/2025 08:35

Did the new job pay early for a reason? Is it going to be like that every month? What is your assessment period start and end date?

If your work paid you earlier than the payment reference date they should have reported the due date, not the actual payment date, so that's worth checking.

@damppatchnot it's not a joke.
Bottom line is that you've had earnings but not UC and decided not to pay your rent (presumably not for the first time as notice is rare after just one month of arrears if you've been a good tenant previously).
You knew when you would be paid in the new job so could have taken advice from UC about how to manage the overlap.
And now you're off work with stress because you've messed up. Your new employer must be thrilled they gave you the job.
Take responsibility and look for solutions as suggested by PPs.
