Where to sell a gold sovereign

The price of gold is very high I have a couple of sovereigns left to me by my DP and would like to sell them.
The local auction house charges 21% + , eBay sell them but I’d be worried about it reaching the other end.
Any suggestions. Would a local jeweller be interested.

I've sold gold and silver items to a local long-established jewellers - they weigh the items and offer you the price. All very straightforward.

Thinking about it they won’t offer the going rate as it’s v high -more sensible for them to wait for price to fall but will phone the reliable local jeweller and ask.

But they’ll never offer the going price. You’ll always lose a cut if whatever it’s worth.

Thingsthatgo · 09/10/2025 06:59

Waiting for the price to fall is not a good idea. Jewellers will always take a cut, but in proportion to the current price. In my town we have one specific bullion dealer who gives a great price, and lots of We Buy Gold places that give an ok price. It is fine to visit a few to compare.
Some sovereigns are worth more than others depending on their year and condition.

I sold gold recently for £23 a gram. I actually felt quids in as I got £900 for a necklace I paid £200 for 20 years ago.

Lois Bullion. Relative is very in to this and this is the place he uses. They send you prepaid packaging and I think he said you get the money the next day.

Bullion by Post. They offer much better prices than any jeweller offered me.

You send it ‘guaranteed next day’ by Post and they pay you the day after it arrives.

I sold mine with them and was very happy with their price & service. My Dsis used them for a piece of gold jewellery and was equally happy.

The Royal Mint buy bold coins.

claracluck1978 · 09/10/2025 07:55

Try asking your local auction house if there is movement on fees. I’m an auctioneer & we v much negotiate fees on gold as the margins are so tight. I’m happy to make £20 on charges on a sovereign/krugerrand and have it in the catalogue as it encourages more items to be consigned.

I would use Bullion by Post or Birmingham Gold Company - both advertise their selling prices online and pay very good rates. I have used both companies.

My Dad sold one - there's a coin place in Alton if you happen to be in that area.
