Self assessment and overpaid tax

Hi all

I did tax self assessment last year (for 2023-2024 tax year) and the calculation showed that I had overpaid (and I agree with this calculation). Shortly after I finished the tax return I got very ill and wasn't keeping on top of things. I now realise I may not have actually got that rebate in that I can't find it showing in my bank account and I haven't paid less tax in this tax year to compensate for it.

Therefore my question is how are overpayments refunded? Is it automatic or do you need to apply?

I'm rather mystified by this as I've only ever done one tax return so far. Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks!!!

When you completed your self assessment, it should've given you the option to select that the monies are paid to your bank account. You input your Account number & sort code and it's paid in directly. Depending on how much you're owed they can change your tax code for the year following.
Depending on what time of year you submitted your return will impact how quick they are at refunding the overpayment.
You should probably log into Gov Gateway to see the status of your return, and if it says it's paid, you'll need to check your accounts to see where too. I don't think they send cheques anymore in any case. I think you get a letter, and told to log in to submit banking info.

Yes as the pp said. It’s quite quick as well. I have had mine 5 days after I filed.
