HMRC income tax demand

Lifestooshort71 · 30/09/2025 08:25

Hi, I'm retired and my state pension is over the tax allowance so I get a tax demand usually in August/September each year. I haven't had anything yet - is it usual for the letter to arrive some time randomly between now and January? I don't want to nudge them (and pull the tail of the tiger) but i do like to pay my bills sooner rather than later. TIA for any thoughts.

Use an online calculator to work out how much it will be roughly and stick the money in a savings account.

Pay it close to the last possible day and earn a bit of interest in the meantime.

Because the state pension is paid 4-weekly, one month I get an extra payment and I stick that away to cover various unpleasantnesses!

"If the State Pension is your only income
If you go over your Personal Allowance and you have tax to pay, HMRC will send you a Simple Assessment tax bill. This will tell you how much you owe and how to pay it"

This is how it works and how it has worked for the last 9 years.

I’m very aware that how it SHOULD work!

but I also know (because it’s my
job and I see it daily!) that HMRC don’t do what they say they will! & ultimately paying the right tax is the individual’s responsibility.

so wait if you want to. But also don’t be surprised if you get a penalty for not paying on time if they don’t tell you how much to pay.

So this is a lie according to you?

6 April 2024 to 5 April 2025
Your tax has not yet been calculated
There is no need to contact HMRC about
this. You will receive a letter if you have paid too much or too little tax.

It’s not “a lie” it’s an admission they haven’t calculated it YET !

it is still the tax payers responsibility to pay the correct amount of tax by 31st January 2026 for the 24/25 tax year.

I’d also properly check and understand HMRC tax calculations … don’t assume they’re correct! Because sometimes they aren’t! They’re either missing information or incorrectly calculated.

It quite clearly says that I will get a letter to let me know how much (as I have done for the last 9 yrs). I have a pretty good idea a ballpark figure but don't see the point in paying it before I have to. Anyway, thanks for your interest
