Jewelry for investment

LottieMeDownAgain · 19/09/2025 21:10

What are your thoughts on buying jewelry for investment purposes as family assets that keep their value over time?

Has anyone ever done this or can give ideas on what to buy that retains value and is also beautiful?

is it even a good idea?

Unlikely to prove a great investment, the markup on jewellery is huge, so selling something second hand will not recoup your money. Buying physical gold eg bars, krugerrand etc may be better, but the prices are volatile and you will need to hold them somewhere secure and insure them

High end men’s watches CAN be a good investment but very subject to fashion trends and wait lists, the reason second hand Rolexes hold their value is the restricted supply of brand new ones, producing the perverse situation where a second hand watch costs more than brand new (because it’s available straight away rather than joining a 2 year wait list)

Absolutely true about Rolex. A man’s will hold its value at the moment but jewellery probably won’t. I have some large diamond earrings and other pieces and will pass them down but they won’t be worth a fraction of what we paid. And my kids will have to pay to insure them!

I think art might be a better bet?

PlatinumBrunette · 19/09/2025 21:59

Jewellery, no. Rolex, yes. Pure gold ingots. Also Hermes bags.
Even art and antiques can go in and out of ‘fashion’.

It’s worth looking at auction prices for art, antiques and jewellery. It’s easy to track how prices are trending over a number of years- what’s out of fashion now can be bought cheaply and it may increase in value in 10 or 20 years time.
My mil has 2 Hermes Birkin bags which she has earmarked for her 2 granddaughters.

18 carat gold from second hand shops or auction.

Most of my expensive jewellery was bought second hand or at auction. If you buy well, it’s a good investment.

@Rattanfurniturereally
Auction is the only way to go.

Bigcat25 · 20/09/2025 03:13

How would you sell it? If you sell it at auction you'll pay a big chunk on fees.

Yes Gold coins can sell & pay no tax on the profit

Jewellery no
