Are we on a low income?

I earn 33.5k pro rata’ to 4 days a week.
DH full time of 48k, I know there’s some high earners on here but I’m guessing the majority earn less, maybe not as little as us.

We have a little one in nursery still which I think makes us feel that much more skint!

Are we low paid? Both in jobs that we needed qualifications for and I have a degree but part time for years and 2 maternity leaves I think has held me back.

Where in the UK are you? That would be fairly low for London but decent in other areas.

biganlittle · 18/09/2025 16:31

We’re Portsmouth

Just out of interest, why do you want to know what people think of your salaries?

mamagogo1 · 18/09/2025 16:32

No you are not. Average household income is £36,700 (2024).

Devilsmommy · 18/09/2025 16:33

Nowhere near low income

hollyblueivy · 18/09/2025 16:33

You have a joint income of £81500

Minimum wage is £12.21 per hour.

what do you think Op?

stargirl27 · 18/09/2025 16:34

No I wouldn't say so, I'd say you are middle earners, probably on the higher end for Portsmouth?

LuckyNumberFive · 18/09/2025 16:34

mamagogo1 · 18/09/2025 16:32

No you are not. Average household income is £36,700 (2024).

Although I believe this is disposable household income, which is net of tax and national insurance.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 18/09/2025 16:36

So joint income is approx 74k that is almost double the average household income of 37k so actually compared to the average you are doing quite well not top 10% but definitely top 20 to 25%

Helpmefindmysoul · 18/09/2025 16:36

You’re better off than if a household had the equivalent from a single income.

Wynter25 · 18/09/2025 16:37

🙄

hollyblueivy · 18/09/2025 16:39

£82k would be about the median household joint income for Portsmouth so you’re in the middle.

Finteq · 18/09/2025 16:43

You're both earning around 40k

That's good

readyforitt · 18/09/2025 16:44

no lol you are not low income
Dh is on 25k
im on maternity 700 a month
we are a household of 3 cats, a 8 month old and now and Dh, would be considered low income but we get by just fine x

user1476613140 · 18/09/2025 16:44

DH earns 28k and we have four DC.....I think you're doing great OP🤣

Seeyouincourtyoufool · 18/09/2025 16:48

lol MN is always good for a laugh.

bringbacksideburns · 18/09/2025 16:48

Don’t believe the amount of wealth on here OP, You are doing fine at this stage in your life. You’d be even better off if you moved more north though.

vodkaredbullgirl · 18/09/2025 16:49

🙄

RedRiverShore5 · 18/09/2025 16:51

You are middle earners I would say, neither of you are in the higher tax bracket and you qualify for full CB, but you are not near minimum wage.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 18/09/2025 16:59

Apparently average full time salary in Portsmouth for women is 35600 full time so you are a little below the average for men is 46000 so your husband is a bit above so together you are average, however not many households have 2 full time wages the average household income is much lower than your combined salaries. So further to my earlier post in terms of full time workers you are not low or high about the 50% median but in terms of total income you are doing a bit better than average

Ohmygodthepain · 18/09/2025 17:02

£80k a year is three times my household income. I find it preposterous that you thing your income is 'so little' even with one in nursery.

There are literally millions of families living on far far less than you earn in the UK OP. Read the room re financial difficulties that huge numbers are facing.

Come back and ask again when your kids are hungry and you genuinely don't have any cash in your account for a few days, or you can't remember the last time you bought new clothes, or had your hair cut, or any more than a weekend in Brid in a caravan for your annual holiday.

Onekissisallittakes · 18/09/2025 17:17

Is this a pisstake?

biganlittle · 18/09/2025 17:23

Sorry It’s not a piss take at all. There’s a post on here about someone earning £170k and struggling and I’m like WTF! I really don’t want people to read mine and think the same.

DH and I have high earning sisters and BILs and so we always feel a little inferior to them on that front. I just wanted to gain an understanding of how we’re doing.

If you really want to know where you are in the UK there is a wealth calculator from the ONS that will tell you what % of people are wealthier than you etc. It's quite interesting.
