Was going over some paperwork recently and had noticed my daughters DLA award stated 2029.. shel turn 16 in 2028 is this printing error? I assumed she'd need to apply for PIP at 16.. she's diagnosed ASD/ADHD/learning disability

What did the DWP say when you asked them?

TheZanyGreenRaven · 13/09/2025 21:34

I have not spoken with them it was after her renewal last year she has already been in recipe of DLA for the past three years i only noted the date stated on her award letter today while shredding through old paperwork and noted its dated untill the day before she turns 17

She will transfer from DLA to PIP (assuming still entitled to it) but the cut off at 17 allows enough time for the forms to be sent in and assessment carried out. Once the decision is made then the DLA will stop (and PIP continue if she is awarded it). It’s to ensure that the payments continue without a break.

^They will send you the forms around her 16th birthday.

She is due to start a specialist setting school, and her ehcp states she must stay in education untill she is 21 would this allow me to become her appointe?

ik in Scotland but ours is until 17 too. At 16 she was given the opportunity to manage her own money and we had an at home interview to see if this was possible , which led to us still managing it

The PIP forms won't be sent out until after your DD's 16th birthday, then the assessment period is several months. DD3 turned 16 in April and we've just started getting PIP. She didn't need a face to face assessment, so her claim was fairly quick. The change from DLA to PIP doesn't backdate even if they go up in the rates.

In terms of becoming an appointee, we didn't have a meeting. I just filled in the letter explaining why DDs needed me to act for them and then I got the notice that I had been appointed. More borderline cases get an assessment, I think.

Pip takes months sometimes even years the backlog is huge so its giving extra time so shes hopefully not without money

Her DLA applications/renewals have been pretty straight forward i just sent in all backing evidence from her consultants educational psychology reports ect i sent around 40 extra pages on her last renewal and everything just stayed as it was, thank you for the clarification though I assumed it was to bridge the gap between turning 16 and then applying for PIP but was expecting DLA to automatically stop once she turned 16

Makes sense it's not money we relay on... it just allows us to send her to extra activities outside of school to support her social development and replace clothing/personal items she looses/chews regularly

They basically give you an extra year of DLA to cover the time it takes to change to PIP 🙂

No, it continues until a decision is made about PIP. That means that if the award goes up, you don't get the back pay for the time you waited for a decision, but by the same token if the award goes down or PIP is declined, you don't owe money.

Hi, DLA worker here. It would be awarded until the day before her 17th birthday ( does not matter if they stay in education or not, many children who are entitled to DLA aren’t in education at all ) the DLA will only carry on after the 16th birthday only if a PIP claim is submitted. If no PIP claim is submitted 28 days after your child turns 16 the DLA payments will stop. It’s a safety net as PIP can sometimes take a while to make a decision.
