Tesco charging more pro-rata for larger packs. Anyone else noticed this?

For example, it is proportionately more expensive to buy a large jar of Sacla pesto that a small one. Also the cheapest way to buy cat food cans at my local Tesco is to buy them singly (only 3 varieties available). Next is the 6 can pack, and most expensive of all by the kilo is the 12 can pack.

This seems crazy to me, and calculated to trip up shoppers who are less tight arsed than me. Has anyone else noticed this?

dh noticed this last week that it was cheaper to buy single packs of felix cat food that a 12 pack - bloody mad.

ChasingSquirrels · 30/05/2008 23:45

i always look at the price per x part of the tag on the shelf, and pick the cheaper one. There are always things that are sometimes cheaper in smaller packs, but I do think in the main it is the other way round.

Twinklemegan · 30/05/2008 23:47

But surely it should never be cheaper to buy less. Where's the logic in that? Unless they're deliberately trying to trick us, which is what I believe they're doing.

Also, with the pesto, they price one of the jars per kilo and one per hundred grams. It just makes it that bit more awkward to compare at a glance...

Yes, I have noticed this too and not only in Tescos.

LuckySalem · 30/05/2008 23:49

no never noticed.

I did notice taht a HUGE bag of pasta used to cost £1.00 about 2 weeks ago and when I went to buy it again yesterday it is now £2.50!!

nancy75 · 30/05/2008 23:49

i noticed this in sainsburys the other day i think it was baked beans, they are something like 50p per tin or £2.30 for a pack of 4. up until recently i have never really checked prices of stuff i buy, and i was really surprised by this as i always thought buying bigger packs was cheaper - sneaky supermarkets!

ChasingSquirrels · 30/05/2008 23:50

that's true, though with a maths background I just convert in my head without even thinking, I do appreciate that this is not true for most people.
It has always been the case though, I used to cost it out in my head years ago when I first started buying groceries myself (and they didn't have the price per) and there was always be some that were cheaper the other way round.
logic...supermarkets...nah, just business!

nannyL · 31/05/2008 01:11

yes...

i have noticed this for quite a few products too

it madness!

1dilemma · 31/05/2008 01:22

Yes will get more and more common
the other thing to watch out for is the product on the shelf being similar to but different from the one on the price tag then when you put it all through the till you don't notice!

M&S did this to me with a sandwich chose tinned salmon cheap(ish) at £1.65 charged me £2.65 at the till

ah you see madam that is an 'eat well' tinned salmon sandwich wrong price on shelf of course

Saddo that I am we always used to check our receipts in local supermarket and regularly got money back for 2 for 1s not applied beign overcharged etc. Got a bit better last couple of years will get worse again I'm sure

Yes, in tesco one 250g jar of marmite now costs slightly more than two x 125g jars (think thats the sizes).

LuckySalem · 31/05/2008 23:30

1dilemma - DP works for tescos and their policy is if they've marked it wrong it's their fault and you get it cheaper.

DP bought a film the other day for £3 which should have been £16 but cos they'd stickered it wrong he got it for £3. They ran to change the stickers though!!

Twinklemegan · 31/05/2008 23:30

Exactly how is this helping the problem with waste packaging, that's what I want to know. And Tesco's been shouting about how environmentally-friendly they are as well! Not that I believe that for a second anyway - hypocrites.

Tesco are selling 2 x 6 packs coke for £4. You can buy the regular 12 pack for £3.49.

1dilemma · 02/06/2008 01:21

Most do LuckySalem but you have to go to the effort of holding up the entire queue whilst someone goes to check, then funnily enough they can never find what you are trying to buy. We usually ended up going to customer services for our money.
However my point wasn't really that they have a sticker saying £1 on a bag of potatoes and charge you £3. It's not that blatent, and they don't sticker things anymore that would make it too hard. It's that they put eg a cheese and onion quiche on the shelf with a label on the shelf saying cheese and onion quiche 50p. You then don't notice that your quiche contains organic toms and they ring up £2 at the till!
You get my point I'm sure
