Just had our bill and I think I could vomit.

We owe them £1000 just over for the period from end of November 2007 to 20th May, so our payments have gone up to £200 a month

Family of 5, 2 adults 3 kids
We have dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer, laptop and tv.

What do you pay?
I'm doing this for research really and if ours is bad then I'm going to swap because we cannot afford to pay that much.

At the moment ours is £24 a month for electric, something like £15 a month for gas. Electricity is Good Energy and gas is Scottish Power.

I'm kind of expecting letters saying we're due a hike. There's dh, me and ds here; dh works at home and ds is at home with the nanny most afternoons. We have a small terraced house.

Loshad · 30/05/2008 17:37

£89/month for elec, family of 6, i work from home, usual bank of electric stuff inc tumble dryer (only use when need to) and cook on electric. Detached old house in very windy spot. Heating in attic rooms and playroom also electric. We obviously overpay in summer, to cover the winter underpay.
Heating otherwise is wood fire (own wood mostly so free) and lpg from bloody flogas - huge surcharges, can't change supplier, hate that bit of it. The lpg costs a fortune and we hardly switch the central heating on. probably spend £700-800 year on that, for about 3 hrs/day for six months of the year.

Nbg · 30/05/2008 17:37

God I really think we need to make more a concerted effort turning things off and maybe using the drier less.

I've called Npower back too and they have capped our price till March which is a start.

If prices are going to go up by 66% like they are reporting then we'll be living on the streets!

Yup, chuck that drier (unless you have no other way at all to dry stuff).

Switching things off is only a pain for a few days until you get into a habit.

Promise the kids pocket money to bug you about it, if you save money on the bill!

Our local community association bought one of those things you can plug into the meter to see how much you are spending in money terms, and we can borrow it. Again if your kids are old enough they might enjoy that.

Collision · 30/05/2008 22:48

£30 on electricity and £22 on gas.

DH is really strict about turning things off when we arent using them and he has saved us a fortune.

2 young children, dwasher, wmachine, computer.

Dont use the tdrier at all. Buy 2 drier thingies for over the bath. Dries in no time and your bath hardly gets used at all. We use the shower so less water too!

expatinscotland · 30/05/2008 22:51

We have a dryer, but it's for real emergencies, like D&V bugs when you need to churn out clean sheets and towels in a hurry.

Otherwise, it goes on the line or the racks in the house.

NOT over your heaters - that will not save you money but cost you more.

Twinklemegan · 30/05/2008 23:04

We're all electric here and our bills are not good. We're with Scottish Hydro and they think there might be something wrong with one or more of the storage heaters and they're sending us one of those usage monitoring things.

I tend to think in terms of units as prices vary so much. We used 3500 units of electricity for heating since the middle of March! That's nearly £200 in two months just for heating! With the storage heaters turned off we are now using about 4 units a day on heating water and about 15 units a day for normal electricity (cooking, washing, tumble drying, etc.). I reckon on that lot coming to around £70 a month, but like you NBG we're paying off a large balance.

I'd recommend that you try taking readings every day for a couple of weeks. That way you really get a feel for how much electricity you're using and where you might be able to cut down.

Divastrop · 30/05/2008 23:12

i started a similar thread last week as i got an electric bill for £311 for a quater.

we are family of 7(2 adults 5 kids),4 bed mid-terrace house.i use the tumble dryer every day but i have done for the last 5 years so i couldnt undertand why my bills were rising so steeply.

we are with npower.

expatinscotland · 30/05/2008 23:40

Scottish Power are the biggest rip off merchants in the entire UK.

LittleBella · 30/05/2008 23:48

About £100 per month with Scottish power gas and electric.

1 lone parent, 2 children, I work pt and sometimes from home so heating is on a lot. I have dishwasher, washing machine, laptop, tumble drier. try to use washing line but use tumble drier for airing off in winter.

Ledodgy · 30/05/2008 23:50

Same amount of children as you NBG and same appliances apart from dryer ours is joint gas and elec and comes to around £120-30 a month with EDF.

cadelaide · 30/05/2008 23:51

2 adults, 3 dcs, usual stuff but no dishwasher, about £100 pm

AbstractMouse · 30/05/2008 23:56

£40pm electric £20pm gas (£40 in winter), 2 adults 2 children 1 bed flat, usual appliances, have a washer/drier but rarely use it because it's crap.

We also have pre-payment meters left over from previous tenants, but suits us as no huge bills to worry about, we are with edf.

ButterflyMcQueen · 30/05/2008 23:59

330/month

dont use dryer apart from essential times

freeze in winter

biggish old end terrace/semi

beckykj · 31/05/2008 11:29

£20 a month electric, £60 a month gas.
With british gas on pre payment meter.
Have gas ch, gas cooker, no tumble drier/dishwasher, 1 adult, 2dc in a 3 bed semi, and have the heating on loads.

Nbg · 31/05/2008 12:21

God this is depressing.

Diva, I'm the same as you. We've been using our drier for nearly 5 years and never had bills like this.

Collision whats this bath drier thing?
Drying the clothes upstairs would be so much easier.

SparklyGothKat · 31/05/2008 12:30

£114 a month for elec.
£30 a month for gas.

I know I have moved to a bigger house, but I also don't get why the bills have risen so steeply. I was shocked to receieve a bill for £800 for 6 months (it was wrong btw but still owed £500 when it was adjusted)

SparklyGothKat · 31/05/2008 12:30

oh in a 4 bed house with 6 of us.

IllegallyBrunette · 31/05/2008 12:35

4 bed semi
1 adult and 3 children
4 tv's and a far bit of other similar stuff games consoles etc
Tumble dryer - rarely used

Electric is roughly £65 a month
Gas is on pre pay meter and I put £10 a week on that.

fairylights · 31/05/2008 12:40

we are with british gas for both (sure not the cheapest, must get around to changing ) and pay by direct debit £67 a month for gas and £35 for elec. There are just me, dh and ds but we do live in a draughty old house without double glazing which i am sure would make a difference. Because they alter the DD according to useage we usually pay less in the autumn (after less use in summer) and then in march time it goes back up again as they work out the average from the winter. Would rather pay a more even amount all through but they don't seem capable of that!

fizzbuzz · 31/05/2008 13:09

6 here, 4 adults (dss 22, ds 18), 2 kids, everything on all the time, despite our best efforts, am completely fed up with it.

3 laptops, 2 games consoles, main pc, tumble dryer on a lot, nowhere else to dry stuff as 4 adults' washing is very large and covers radiators all the time. tv's always left on....12 radiators ( I wish some would move out, it would be a lot cheaper..)

£200 per month

slayerette · 31/05/2008 13:39

We are with Scottish Power dual fuel, £77 per month. It's gone up steeply recently but still doesn't seem too bad reading this thread. Have just switched to their discounted energy scheme until July next yr, then will shop around again.

WendyWeber · 31/05/2008 13:57

3 adults, 1 teenager, 3 PCs, 1 laptop, 3 TVs, sky+ on all the time, gas CH, d/w, dryer not used that much - currently elec is 70 a month and gas is 55 although we did get a rebate at the end of the 12 months.

I think rates might have gone up since then but our DDs haven't. We have got quite a lot of low-energy bulbs in now though which I hope is helping a bit (mind you we also have 6 of those halogen spots in the kitchen and 3 in the bathroom, they're 50w each ).

Collision · 01/06/2008 21:26

Nbg, I got the idea of drying the clothes upstairs off Mumsnet!!

I have 2 airers which would normally be freestanding in the living room or outside on a sunny day. I went to see if they fit in the bath and they did!! This means all our clothes now dry in the bathroom over the bath and has changed my life!

I also have an airing cupboard with a shelf in it and I attached a radiator airer onto it and use the space for DH's shirts and jackets to dry!
