Who insured it before? Won't they continue to do so? At double the rate of course!

SaintGeorgeasaurus · 28/05/2008 00:02

'Insurance empty property' brings up a decent looking list of choices.

cupsoftea · 28/05/2008 09:32

Very difficult to insure an empty property as it depends on many factors & there are loads of questions.

Katiekitty · 28/05/2008 09:59

I'm insuring my late mother's house, which is empty. I spent a good week on the phone calling everyone and no one would touch it. I'm also using Jardine Lloyd Thompson, as the Law Society recommended them. It's very expensive as compared to insuring a normal residential house, but it's peace of mind I'm after, so hey ho.
I called them up and got it sorted over the phone. It's payable every three months and if you cancel, there's no refundable part, plus, there's no days of grace, so you have to be organised in making sure you keep it all paid up.

SmudgeyDoodle · 28/05/2008 10:15

Don't know if this is possible for you but my mum has managed to keep her Aunt's house insured even though it's empty by going and staying in it one night every month or so? Depends on the situation I guess.

fifitinkerbell · 28/05/2008 10:29

I woke for an insurance broker & we can insure empty properties only over a 3 or 6 months policy if you want a quote let me know & I will send you my email address

cupsoftea · 28/05/2008 13:42

KKitty - hows the issue with the veg chilli going? Was thinking about this the other day !!!

Seabright · 28/05/2008 13:52

I can second the recommendation for Hiscox - we use them at work (insuring empty properties) and they do my own house - at much cheaper rates than "regular" insurers too & with better cover

Katiekitty · 28/05/2008 16:33

Totally hijacking here, apologies...

Hello Cupsoftea! I haven't heard a ruddy thing for ages! They (environmental health)called me about a month ago and told me they'd have a result any day, but since then, not a dicky bird. I've been too busy to chase them up, so at the moment, it is still a mystery. (brief background: I found a chunk of 'meat' in a tin of vegetarian chilli, the offending item has been under the official microscope of enviromental health for a good few months and I'm waiting to find out what it is).
So, no news at the moment, I will be sure to let you know though as soon as I hear!

Back to house insurance....

cupsoftea · 29/05/2008 14:15

(Thanks for the update kk - hope they get back to you soon - tell them that people here want to know what it was!!!)

MrsMills · 29/05/2008 14:21

Our previous house was going to be empty for around 3 months, completely empty, iirc our insurers (direct Line) sorted it no probs, and it was cheaper than we expected
