I'm a bit confused about what I need to do.
I'm currently claiming child benefit for two children DS17 and DD14.
When DS17 left school last year I had a form through from HMRC and had to sign to say that he was staying in full-time education and I wanted to carry on claiming. He is doing level 2 and 3 car mechanics at college.
He has just completed level 2 (going back in September to start level 3) but over the summer he's managed to find himself a little work placement in a local garage which is paying him a little bit of money.
So far it's just been a few random payments here and there, but today they've asked him to fill in an HMRC form and give his national insurance number to officially put him on the books.
No formalities ever seemed to be discussed properly, but I'm assuming he was on a bit of a trial, and they've decided they quite like him 🤷🏼♀️
During the summer holidays he'll be doing 3 to 4 days per week, but once he's back at college it will most likely be two days a week maximum.
Do I need to tell HMRC and stop claiming his part of the CTB?
He is still in full-time education, just that he is earning himself a little bit of pocket money as well. I think only about £7 an hour because he's under 18.
On the CTB website it says I can carry on claiming as long as he's in full-time education, but it doesn't seem to mention whether this changes if he has a little part-time side job.
I'm very wary of not giving HMRC the correct information and potentially get a fine or something!
Thanks for any advice 🤯
