Bank charges - has anyone managed to get them back?

Just had a heart attack when checking my statement - I went £20 over my limit and they have charged me £156 - has anyone managed to get bank charges refunded - I remember something about it in the press a couple of months ago.

It would be worth phoning your bank and asking them to waive the charges for you as a goodwill gesture on this occasion.

In terms of bank charges in general, no banks are paying out on claims for the last 6 years worth of charges until there has been made a decision by the court deciding if charges are unfair or not. That might take long enough too!

www.moneysavingexpert.com gives you lots of information about this.

I have had charges refunded in the past before the court case bandgeek's talking about

I claimed for lots of people. I led a group and we all got loads back over 6 years. My hubby got 900 quid and I got 450. Best friend got 2500 and another friend 750 quid. Big sis got 250. The list is endless.

it worked for us.

thanks for this - I have looked at the template letter and it seemed a bit aggressive as a starter, and I am quite worried they may close my account, but your post was encouraging.

facinguptothis- the financial ombudsman looks very badly on them shutting your bank account, very badly indeed. on the whole, its stopped happening.

the amount you've been charged is absolutely ridiculous and the bank knows it. would it really be such a bad move to move bank anyway? (unless you can't of course)

mmm, good point

You should definately try it. The bank give you an offer with the first letter to try and resolve the case as quickly as possible.
They are no longer allowed to close accounts for reclaiming what is considered to be your money.
None of our groups bank accs were closed.
Have a go! Remeber to go back as far as possible, I thought I had been straight for years but about 5 years ago must have had a bad patch and had quite a few charges and claimed most of them back.

If you don't get an offer straight away, keep trying tho, for the sake of a couple of letters its worth it. x
