Hi,

I owe HMRC £1400 that I just cannot pay at the moment. I am seriously stressed over it and terrified of the consequenes. I am constantly worried that I am going to get a know at the door, or that they will take money from my bank account etc. I am hoping to be able to pay it all back by the end of the year

Will they be heavy handed with me for a debt of this size?

Depends what it's for. Five them a ring and set up a payment plan

Ring them up and set up a payment plan, it will only get worse the longer you leave it.

Call them and set up a payment plan. I have seen them send the debt collectors in for small amounts not owed for long and do nothing for large debts owed for a long time. There is no way of knowing. Only way to be certain of no action is set up a payment plan.

What is the debt for? Self assessment would be a priority and they will let you do a payment plan. Give them a call in the main they are very reasonable :) don’t fret.

Call them and set up a payment plan. Have a think about how much you could repay each month and make it a sensible amount

HMRC are not going to send anyone to your door or help themselves to the contents of your bank account over £1400.

Can you afford monthly instalments? Or are you expecting your finances to change over the next few months meaning you'll have more money later in the year? In either case, you need to talk to them about your circumstances and how you plan to pay this off, so they know you're a 'can't pay' not a 'won't pay'.

Will they not just adjust your tax code so you pay over the next 12 months. They have done this to me, with tax owed on savings interest.
