How to have an income from home??

SevenTwoEight · 16/06/2025 12:49

Would massively appreciate any advice or thoughts on how I could make an income please.
Have one child at school; need to do 845 drop off and 330 pick up. Child can’t do breakfast or after school club due to issues; school day is long enough for them.
Have one young baby at home with me. No regular childcare available from family. Too young currently for nursery. Even when old enough for nursery, any income would need to be enough to cover nursery fees and whatever £ amount leftover be enough to make it all worthwhile.
Can’t go out to work in evenings/night as need to feed the baby.
I have points in the day when baby naps when I’m free and I’m basically free 730pm onwards in the evening (but need to stay at home for the dream feed).
What on earth can I do at home in the evenings to get any level of income? Im happy to pretty much do anything.
Thank you for any ideas.

A few things I did, selling books online and at toddler groups/family events (I purchased children's books from the wholesalers and sold them on). I used Facebook groups as well. I rented out children's costumes and did parties (canvas painting). I know longer do this part from the costume hire.
If you are good on social media, you could offer social media management.
Sign upto Market Research, had some good response with that £80 an hour for sharing opinions.
I was good with Facebook groups and offer advertising packages which worked very well. I did leaflet distribution with the baby in the buggy - hard work though. None of the above is easy but it is a way. I have had some awful customers so making sure you have boundaries as some won't care you have kids. E.g I tell my clients it is a 3 week turnaround for leaflet delivery.
I also report empty houses for £20. I now host business zoom events and business workshops from home.
Other ideas, selling items online, baking and tutoring online. You could be a freelance consultant to businesses who need communication improvement (set up a profile on Linkedin) I find having various multiple income streams have helped me massively and to be there for my children and provide for them. I am a single parent as well. It is tough.

Edited

Can you suggest any good Market Research companies?

... and what do you mean by 'report empty houses for £20'

due to my stroke I can't go back to my job & really need WFH I can do 'as & when' from home. (Getting ready to go out takes a lot of energy, as would getting there, so I'd be a pretty crappy on site employee just now!!)
It would also mean I could work around medical appointments & rehab.

Sillyname63 · 17/06/2025 19:25

Home ironing service? You could fit it in around your baby's naps and in the evening, but be realistic with the charges and your turnaround timings. Someone local to us makes wax melts and personalised gifts and Xmas tree decoration if craft is your thing You could advertise on your community FB page to start. I would look into some sort of liability insurance too.

wont provide a massive income but im doing surveys to try and boost my mat pay a little - just to help me out with some extra spending money.
im doing probably a few a week and have done £11 so far (in that week) I figured if I can do that consistently each week for a year it would be £570 more than nothing! I think it’s tax free the first £1000 too. There’s a joining bonus through this link if you want to try it - https://attapoll.app/join/ksmmh (think it’s only 40p but a win is a win!)

From the mums I know who did not return to work and needed extra income the only viable options really have been to:

  1. Express for the late night feed and pick up supermarket shifts a few evenings a week or a weekend morning/afternoon/evening. Their partner looked after the children during this time.

  2. Childminding.

Dressinggownqueenslay · 18/06/2025 05:46

Just for a little extra money - could you start having a big clear out and selling your bits on Vinted/Ebay? I have been culling through drawers/wardrobes in the evenings then during nap times I take pictures of items and upload/package items. This is of course limited to what assets you have but I found it a great buffer during maternity leave.

This sounds like MLM. If it is, my advice to the OP is ‘run a mile’ from it. Very, very, few people earn any money from MLM - only those at the top of the pyramid. Everyone else loses money financing the few. Also loses friends who they are expected to recruit.

If you have a talent/eye for language & literature, and you have keyboard skills, you might look out for proof-reading and/or sub-editing work, which is easy to do remotely. It doesn't pay that highly, but it is "pick up and put down" work - within a deadline, of course - which could work together with your childcare commitments.

I do some editing work for people who are highly qualified in their field, but who's English is only 99% perfect when it needs to be 100% perfect. It's work I enjoy and I only do as much as I want to. However, a dear friend (no longer with us) ran a whole business based on checking the PhD theses of foreign students, which, apparently, had to be in English.
Might be worth a look?

@MaddestGranny Would you mind sharing how you got into this please? And where to find this kind of work? Any websites, etc. that you could recommend?

So says every MLM recruiter. It’s the same script from all of them - part of the training along with the same books all these MLM promote for “personal development”. The truth is MLM or Network Marketing companies use misleading advertising, cult like approaches, some pretty impressive marketing I’ll admit & layers of obfuscation to cost many people for the benefit of very few. I really hope the OP does not fall for it. Wishing you a nice day too.

Sounds as if you need to work evenings and weekends (with the dream feed ultimately being done by someone else). How about training as a driving instructor? Evenings and weekends are always in demand.

I suggested evening work but 2 commenters thought this would not be suitable

SevenTwoEight · 18/06/2025 13:58

Thank you all so so much. I really really appreciate it!! Not going to lie, I felt quite overwhelmed by it all. But, I’ve just written loads down, my research is starting and the ideas are coming. I realise from your messages that I need a short term plan for the next year approx. And I need a second longer term plan for 12months+ time. Thank you all for your help. I feel much more prepared to get things going. Xxxx

Following for tips!
I invigilate, and I love it, but obviously it's seasonal.
Also sell on Vinted. I make about £500 a year but I only do it occasionally.

ICantPretend · 18/06/2025 22:28

How I supplement my income is by selling on eBay and vinted . Just my kids used clothes toys books etc. and stuff I no longer want . I make between £150-£500 approx a month .

I always read stuff like this on these threads and it never makes sense. You're looking at getting less than 50% back for used clothes and toys, realistically I'd say more like 20%. So if you're making back £150-500 each month, you must be spending crazy amounts each month on new stuff. Surely it's much more cost effective to cut down on spending, than carry on spending loads and then sell on?

Making £500 you're looking at spending at least £1.5k, very possibly a lot more.

TheTigerWhoCameToEatMyArsehole · 18/06/2025 23:21

I buy and sell. Find something you know about hunt out bargains dress them up resell for a small profit. I’ve made a grand this year so far. Not a lot, but still not bad. I’ve put it all back in buying more “stock”.

sleepchaser · 19/06/2025 10:09

This would have to wait until kids are a few years older, but, I do dog boarding in my home, for people who don't like kennels. You can easily look after 4 little dogs and charge £35 a night for each. That's £140 a day / £4200 a month.
People assume I do it for "pocket money", they have no idea how lucrative it is.

I've been doing it now for 12 years, no way would I ever work for someone else ever again. I have about 60 regular dogs, that are well behaved sweethearts, that come to me every time their owners go away.

You need a licence from the council (£120 per annum) and insurance from Cliverton (also £120 per annum), then get some business cards and flyers printed up, put an Ad on FB ....and you're off. I've never been without business, and have turned away hundreds of people because I am always full.

sleepchaser · 19/06/2025 10:12

Have to say as well, you could make money buying and selling on Vinted. I've sold about £700 worth of stuff in the last few months. This is all stuff of mine and DH's that we no longer want, but I have no doubt that you could buy and sell and make a profit, as there are loads of people who sell things for £1, that I reckon you could get £3 for.

GentleJadeOP · 17/06/2025 17:41

Yes I know that’s true definitely but she was looking for a few hours in the evening working from home which I know they do after a training period. Obviously would need to be when husband/partner there to look after the baby

No they don’t @GentleJadeOPcall handlers work from call centres not home working. SOME of their clinicians (doctors, nurses, paramedics) are able to work from home but only after working for them for over a year and completed all necessary training.

RalphWiggumsCrayon · 19/06/2025 14:56

I'm a freelance copywriter. I make a decent full-time wage working, on average, 4 hours a day, setting my own hours. Might be worth a try if you can string a sentence together.

However, I'm not sure how much longer it's going to be a viable career due to AI.

They do in Essex

typicaltuesdaynight · 19/06/2025 20:10

Icanpretend what are you talking about? I have 2 boys who grow out of there clothes a lot , my kids get good quality hand me down clothes, gifts of clothes and I also buy quality 2nd hand for them, I don’t know where you’re getting this very large figure from?? Also I don’t sell what wouldn’t be happy to wear . We take care of our stuff . I sell outgrown toys that have also been gifts my 8 year old is hardly wanting to hold onto a in the night garden or bing toy is he?

PunishmentSnart · 19/06/2025 20:50

Selling cakes or getting a printing machine and selling personalised cups/t-shirts etc seems really popular at the moment.

Also gift boxes - e.g. getting key rings/chockate/socks etc and boxing as a letterbox type gift

Would you mind sharing how you got started with copywriting? I'm leaving teaching next month and copywriting is on my list of options.

I just started bidding for projects on People Per Hour to gain experience and testimonials, as well as a portfolio, and took it from there, but I’m not sure how active PPH is these days - it was 15 years ago when I started.

As you’re a teacher, have you looked at companies like Twinkl? I often see them looking for educational writers with a teaching background.
