PREMIUM BONDS JUNE ONWARDS

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/05/2025 23:28

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

PB have been about since 1957

Been 30yrs (April 2024) since a million was then the highest prize

nsandi-corporate.com/news-research/news/30-years-premium-bonds-ps1-million-jackpots#

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win every purchase - years ago you could buy £1 at a time.

Odds of winning £1 million on Premium Bonds at face value are 1 in 2,489,469,818 if you have £25 in PBs.

However most people have more than £25 so the odds depend on how much you do hold.

If you have £100 the odds in any given month are 1 in 49,563,028

£1,000 in PB the odds are 1 in 4,954,991

£50,000 in PB the odds are 1 in 96,839

To win anything odds are 1 in 22000

So providing you have more than £100 you have better odds than winning the lottery 😄

And obviously far better than the lottery - you don’t lose your stake !!!!!!

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

This means they will go into the next months draw without losing a month

Or sent to named bank account if winnings take over FH /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

Martin Lewis’s opinion on pb - quite an interesting read

https://www.saga.co.uk/money-news/premium-bonds

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to then hoping win thousands to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

We've seen over the years £100 holding win a million (March 25) also a £100 win £100k and £50 win £25k and even £1 won £10k

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /few thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1925 in prizes

If have £5k average luck is £175 winnings a year

Obviously some people have better 'luck' than others and some worse - Ie full holdings and not winning anything a month or two or even longer

PB odds calculator below

moneymarvel.co.uk/calculators/premium-bonds/

Or this one is quite good as shows the interest rate of the winnings - obv anything over 4% is good as if in an account you wouid be taxed so be more like 3%)

In August 2023, NS&I hiked the prize fund to a 24-year high of 4.65 per cent from 4 per cent, a level not seen since 1999 🙀🙀🙀🙀

But it has been steadily falling since, and of April 2025, the prize fund rate - the amount of the total fund paid out in prizes - is 3.8 %

https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/cost-of-living/nsi-premium-bonds-rate-changes-31317737

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 1/22000 can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,925

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

To work out your own personal % rate

Take your total prizes, divide it by the number of months and x by 12.

Then divide that figure into your total holding and x 100.

So say £500 prizes in 6 months / 6 x 12 = £1000.

Holdings £30,000 = 1000/30000 x 100 = 3.33% interest rate.

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 4% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So anything over 3% in winnings is considered good.

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything so that they will def earn x amount of interest

But then lose the what if won a million or £100k

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

Current name

Current address

Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland

There are 2 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

Blue - the app its self works but the showing early often doesn't work for me but those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

Seems the higher the winnings the earlier it shows and can be from 6pm the night before the app shows

And to confuse things I have a White app that is a bookmark - which shows info/list 😄😄😄

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out if going to get a visit from AM 😂

The two winners of the £1million prizes will be contacted by Agent Million (AM) 😂😂 the day before the first working day of the corresponding month.

There may however be exceptions to this, such as when the first working day of the month is a bank holiday, for example.

So

Day before first working day - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Day after first working day , including weekends - cream app showing all winnings

You can also check to see if have won via this link with your holders number

www.nsandi.com/prize-checker

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

NS&I Premium Bonds rate changes as expert warns of more cuts

National Savings and Investments said that the lowering was being made in response 'to changes in the savings market'

It’s in the info post which is my op

Just a heads up if anyone is planning on withdrawing money from any NS&I accounts, including PBs. I just rang to find out why a withdrawal I made earlier this week hasn't arrived in my bank account and they said they are having a problem with Nat West, the bank they use to clear funds.

I was told the payment could be two or three days late (it should have arrived next day) but he couldn't make any promises. They aren't informing their customers as far as I can see; nothing on their website nor on any social media I looked at, which I think is unacceptable.

BuyingButterAndSatinSandals · 04/06/2025 11:01

Ignoring what we would do with a bigger win for a moment, I was pondering what I could do - and it had to be something frivolous - with this month's small win of £225 if it wasn't needed to build up the PBs and set to reinvest. The answer was going out for a walk and tea and cake once a week for 22 weeks with a DC. I would probably have to go for more long walks after that! What would you do - or do you do - with your small wins if it wasn't - or isn't - set to reinvest or needed for essentials?

Carriemac · 04/06/2025 13:41

£100 on 40k

That's annoying,@IDareSay, I requested mine early Monday morning and it was in my account this morning, a day earlier than expected.

I won £250, it’s paid for 2 nights hotel on the seafront with my partner and with enough change for a nice lunch with a glass of wine ❤️ we are going in 3 weeks.
We haven’t been together long, and the first week I met him I had an accident which laid me up a few weeks.. he was wonderful and made sure I had everything I needed at all times ☺️ he’s a keeper.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 04/06/2025 17:35

Great question @BuyingButterAndSatinSandals I was wondering what others spend any winnings on if not reinvesting. I love the thought of a regular walk and cakes treat.

I have a 'treats tin' into which any windfalls go to be spent on treats, not essentials, and that's where I've decided any PB wins will go.

I've had my eye on a piece of art for quite some time but thought it a bit expensive in the gallery for a canvas print (nearly £600) but last month it appeared on eBay for £110 coinciding with a PB win so it was meant to be!

MananaPenelope · 04/06/2025 17:49

My winnings, which have been £200 max until this month’s £225, just go towards my monthly life pot. Both of my DC are young adult students. We go somewhere nice for lunch/an afternoon once a month which is my treat. It could pay for a nice lunch, trip to the cinema and bookshop one afternoon. I still pay for things like haircuts for the three of us every eight weeks. In my head I use my winnings for things like that when really they’re just spent on ‘life’ stuff. This month’s £225 might technically be enough to pay for the cattery when we go away next month.

recklessgran · 04/06/2025 18:12

I realise we're fortunate but we have an account where we save all the winning. ane use them for holiday spending money. We're off to Ibiza in a couple of weeks and have just over £1500 in the pot. I know it's daft but it feels like "free" spending money to us.

westisbest1982 · 04/06/2025 18:54

If I hadn't reinvested this month's prize of £25 I would have used it towards buying a bottle of champagne.

bigblockofcheeseday · 04/06/2025 19:30

A week at Centre Parcs (one week only 400 euros in France!)

westisbest1982 · 03/06/2025 20:10

I think there's something in this big blocks tend to win theory I've mentioned twice on this thread and I know others have talked about it in threads gone by. I just checked my bond record and I have 19 blocks total ranging from £25 to £10,000K. I've won three separate prizes and each are from my biggest blocks (£500, £1,000 and £10,000).

Edited

Just checked and my 10k win was on a £25 bond! Very much in the minority though amongst the 10k winners - think there were only around 12 on £25 bond, but one was on a £10 bond! 😮

That's incredible. Was it a reinvest?

Yes, from 7 years ago.

LouisaMayAlcott · 05/06/2025 07:11

My winnings go into my ISA because we’re saving for a caravan and every bit of spare money goes in there.

BigDahliaFan · 05/06/2025 07:25

i won £75 last month and I sent it to a charity that provides vet care for homeless peoples’ pets. The charity popped up on my FB feed just as I found out I’d won a bit so it seemed like fate. This month’s £75 (coincidence) was reinvested.

blitzen · 05/06/2025 07:28

£200 for me this month on FH

nettie434 · 05/06/2025 11:23

This month’s £75 (coincidence) was reinvested.

Or maybe karma because you helped out the vet charity? Definitely a good coincidence anyway.

I have taken out nearly £30k of bonds for various home improvements in the last few months. At least now I'm not so disappointed when I get the 'sorry, better luck next time message given that my odds of winning a prize have gone down so much.

Ohsonotscrumptiois · 04/06/2025 01:00

Not a bean, nothing since October on 21K, I even bought £100 more to spur it on. If I don’t win next month I think it’s all coming out and going into savings accounts. Never ever had such a dry spell.

I haven’t won anything since 2023. But then my total holding is £1750. Had FH until 2022 then we needed the cash to renovate the house and haven’t build it up much since.

id take a win of £25 now!

elkiedee · 05/06/2025 23:42

I locked myself out of my account the other day. I'm fairly sure I haven't won anything this month, but I've increased my holding by transferring the money which was in a Regular Saver account and then held on Instant access for a bit. So I'd like to sort this out so I know whether I got the last transfer in in time for the July draw.

I've only won one prize since I put a little money into Premium Bonds, but it was £50 so a pretty good return on my holdings - initially £25, then £100, £400 since July 2024, then up to £678 in January! Now just over £3,000, and if I can sort out access I will also add my £100 from Nationwide Fairer Share Payment at the end of this month. So though interest rates are dropping, I'm still building up my savings.

I still have most of my savings in cash ISAs, and am expecting to use some/most of it for the kids' education in due course - contribution to university living costs for one, perhaps some extra music lessons for the other who is going to continue studying music in FE.

Congratulations to anyone who's been lucky this month, commiserations to everyone who like me, hasn't.

wohmum · 06/06/2025 08:20

Ignore all that…..

I closed and reopened the prize checker and it was there! I’ve won £100! Very happy with that 😅

So I had an email this morning from NS&I saying I’d won a prize (first one ever!) but there is nothing on the prize checker and nothing in my account….
this is the email address it came from - outgoing @ ns and I.com (minus the spaces) Is the normal one?
