Where do we sell our car?

To get the best price?

Thanks in advance

You usually get the best price selling yourself, local ad, eBay or FB marketplace, but you have to put up with potential time wasters, dealing with strangers, who are probably OK, but may not be, fraudsters and other assorted dickheads. And then post sale, them coming back to you with any problems that occur. If you are buying from a dealer, part exchange is good, if not. carwow may not give you as much money, but give you a much easier way to sell it.

If you want no hassle and no comeback then p/x it against another car at a dealer. Expect to get less than a private sale though. FB Marketplace will get you lots of messages from annoying people and scammers. AutoTrader is a better bet but not free. You could use We Buy Any Car but again you will get less money than a private sale

Part exchange or give/ sell it to a friend.
Selling a car privately is a massive pain.

Happywishful · 24/05/2025 19:57

Thank you. Sounds like a hassle trying to sell privately; may have to use carwow or motorway.

I got £1k more than my best Carwow offer this week by selling to a local car dealer.
Carwow was super easy to use to get the car listed.
If I'd been buying another from a dealer I'd have part exchanged though for ease.

AlloftheTime · 24/05/2025 20:00

@Happywishful I’ve just used motorpoint who offered considerably more that we buy any car and were very easy to use.

ClassicalQueen · 24/05/2025 20:35

I used motorway and the process was very smooth. Money was in the bank before the car left my driveway.

Justme2023123 · 24/05/2025 20:37

I sold mine through Carwow, was very easy and I got a lot more for my car than I expected.

Littletreefrog · 24/05/2025 20:39

If you are buying another car then I would just part-ex it.

Motorway were a huge pain for me. Gave me an initial valuation then made me upload about 100 pictures on the app. Then set a reserve price I couldn't alter. Then I got 1 offer for £500 less than the reserve price.

Was fed up by this point so took it. Once I accepted that offer I was harassed with texts and calls to dig out historic service history receipts even though I sold it with partial service history, so they should have been happy with what I gave them which was the most recent service history receipt.

Guy showed up and tried to knock another £600 off I told him to fuck off I'd just take it to a dealer to sell.

He said I didn't flag the alloys as damaged even though of the 100 pictures I uploaded about 20 of them were of the alloys that clearly showed the scuffs he was trying to gazunder me with.

Eventually settled on him giving me what we agreed as by that point I was either going to sell the car to him or set it on fire.

I used motorway - hassle free and got about a grand more than We Buy Any Car

roses2 · 24/05/2025 21:41

sold mine using motorway a few months ago. Gave me the highest offer although the guy told me he also saw the car on car wow as I listed on both sites the same time and it sold for 20% less there. He made up a whole load of issues to get the price down to the car wow price - I just needed it gone so gave in.

Happywishful · 25/05/2025 07:20

Thank you all. Will check the options.

I got £2k more from we buy any car than what was offered to me as a part exchange at the dealership so it pays to check out your options first.

Been through this twice recently as we were going from two cars to one and neither of the previous vehicles were what we needed for the future.

We sold a 2016 Fabia with around 60k miles quickly an painlessly through Motorway for a price close the their offer. Dealer picked it up with no issues and no deductions.

Second was 2013 diesel Berlingo with 140k. Process was a bit more aggy. Tried both Motorway and WBAC. Latter's offer was actually better but found the process draggy. Sold it to Motorway for about £200 less than WBAC's offer but in the overall scheme and a new car at £20k that wasn't a lot.

Pick up was problematic though. The guy nitpicked multiple issues, most of them visible on the pics. Took a fair bit of assertive bargaining to get them up to £1k.

We sold ours on Autotrader. Quick and easy and got more than offered by Motorway, Webuyanycar etc
