Perspective pls: would you apply for CIFAS registration?

I'm a worrier and would like a bit of perspective. Grateful for sensible answers that don't make me more anxious than I need to be.

I'm starting to worry about my risk of ID theft. In the last ten years, I've lost my purse with driving licence, had my laptop stolen which had some scanned personal docs like old passport, lost my original birth certificate, used gambling websites.

Most recent of these was nearly 2 years ago. To date, there's been nothing suspicious on any of my credit reports or bank statements. I check them regularly.

In light of the Co-op breach, I'm considering applying for CIFAS protective registration. Co-op has confirmed they've taken name, DOB, address, email address, phone number.

Has anyone done this? Does anyone think this is overkill considering nothing has happened in two years? What would you do?

I did this several years ago. Back in something like 2015? I got a letter from the royal mail saying our postman's trolley had been stolen. Then I never received a new bank card for my one that had expired. It was suspected it was in the trolley. That person then had my name, address, bank details as printed on the card. They used that info to order a copy of a free credit report and then set about contacting every bank I wasn't banked with and trying to take out loans / credit cards in my name. Luckily, all the banks were really good and dealt with it very well. I had identity theft protection through one of my credit cards at the time - they recommended cifas registration and also asking all my banks to put additional security on my accounts (such as all new direct debit instructions to be confirmed in writing - not just online). It all happened within a few weeks of the theft, so I think as you have lost your things a couple of years ago with nothing untoward yet, you might be OK. But for the sake of £30, I'd say if it puts your mind at ease, then why not. I also signed up to experian's ID theft alert service, which sends me alerts if any of my details are found on leaked information.

I'm in the same position re the Coop OP and I'm thinking I might apply for the CIFAS registration too
