Dc 7 keeps asking about a bank card .. their school friends have them and in dcs words ' their mums put money on them for doing jobs like drying up or helping tidy' then said probably just a few hundred £ a week ! I think the friends may be slightly exaggerating 😅 .
But I would like to get one for them for little chores or rewards and was thinking about it anyway.

My 11 year old has a Rooster card. Mostly because it’s free as I already bank with the provider. Look at what your usual bank offers as first step. Otherwise you might have to pay a subscription.

TeenToTwenties · 29/04/2025 21:19

I'm old fashioned.
I think cash at that age is more tangible.
Plus the idea of paying for having an unnecessary card dies not sound like teaching good financial sense to me.

DD has a HyperJar card. App is really easy and you can also use abroad with no transaction fees.

CalypsoCuthbertson · 29/04/2025 21:23

Would not recommend GoHenry at all. They kept having system issues which meant DS’s card would randomly show a negative balance (despite no overdraft facility) and took days to fix it. Their attitude about it was pretty unimpressive. That must have happened about 3 separate times before I got fed up and closed the account.

We use Revolut instead now which has been great so far. It’s also free - Go Henry isn’t.

Whyherewego · 29/04/2025 21:23

We have a Revolut under 18 card. Go Henry seemed very bad, high charges and zero protection. My DP son had his nicked and basically.all the money lost they aren't a bank and have none of the bank protections

Needspaceforlego · 29/04/2025 21:27

Rooster is free with Natwest group includes RBS and Ulster bank I think.
Or hyperjar

Definitely find a free one

SlashBeef · 29/04/2025 21:29

My kids have hyperjar cards. We really like it.

DefyingGravidy · 29/04/2025 21:32

Rooster free if you’re with NatWest

you don’t want to be paying £4 per month (Go Henry) to put on £1.50 a month for doing a few chores.

It is helpful them having a card when they’re a bit older, several school trips have been places where you can only use cards not cash (zoo, a theme park).

Gothamcity · 29/04/2025 21:32

Hyperjar. No fees, app is brilliant, and like pp said, can use abroad fee free too, we got adult accounts to link to the kids ones, so just use this when we're abroad and just transfer over what we need each day, so no one can rinse us if the cards were to get lost or stolen. It's so handy to be able to move money as and when needed, and the kids love using the app to see what they have, where they've spent etc. Makes them really think about whether they need/want something when they see there balance and know how much something will use up. They have created their own savings jars on there and move money across to build up if there's something they want to save up for, so I think it's teaching them really good financial habits.

Thank you. Will avoid go Henry.
Will look at the others.

Monzo do a card for kids that's free, it's linked to an adult monzo, and v easy to transfer cash and see what they are soending! Kids can also have a savings pot.

dollyblue01 · 29/04/2025 21:40

Interesting to hear this @CalypsoCuthbertson we have the same issue. One time one of my children actually managed to go into an overdraft he didn’t have as the account showed he had more money in the account then he did. He was old enough to be able to go out with friends and genuinely spent what he thought he had. He went about £60 overdrawn once the balances were all corrected the next day. The customer service was appalling and could not understand why I was unimpressed that an account that should never have been able to go overdrawn had done.

CalypsoCuthbertson · 29/04/2025 21:42

@everymeeveryyou if you have a Google there are loads of people who had the same issue. I don’t think GoHenry care tbh. I wrote to them that it was unreal to have a banking service that could just ‘lose’ your money, and they just said they’re not a bank! 🙄

ChompinCrocodiles · 29/04/2025 23:20

Both my under 16's have Monzo and I'd highly recommend.

I can see both accounts and ds2 (15) has his own app. Ds3 (7) just looks at my app.

Free, easy to set up and they can choose their favourite card colour.
