How do I deal with a debt recovery service/bailiffs?

The man who I assume used to rent our flat before we bought it has had letters coming through for months from a company who he owes money to. I have spoken to the company after they wrote to 'the occupiers' and clarified that the man in question doesn't live here anymore and can't have done since january 2006. Their response was that they had checked 'records' (although clearly not the electoral roll) and they had proof that he lives here. I reiterated that it wasn't true and then they asked me where he is now and how they can contact him. How am I supposed to know this? This morning, a letter turns up addressed to him but it is in a different envelope to the others. I can see the words 'recovery service' through the window of the envelope so I assume that it is a letter telling him that his debts have now been passed to the bailiffs. I knew that it was only a matter of time before this happened as I have been sending post back to the previous company marked 'return to sender, not known at this address' for months.

I feel quite intimidated by the response I had when phoning up before and am scared about what will happen when the bailiffs turn up while I'm opening the door clutching a baby. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening? If not, what do I do when the bailiffs arrive?

I gather they had two or three debts totalling about £6000. It seems that they may have owned a company that went bust. When we first moved in there were so many red letters coming through the door it was ridiculous and trying to get some of the services reconnected was a bit of a pita.

We've had loads and loads of letters over the past 5 years from debt recovery services threatening bailiffs after the previous owners ran up a lot of debt. None of them has ever turned up, apart from a guy from the water company who was very polite and took my word for it that they no longer lived here.

Ladies,

Thank-you for your help. At least I have a plan now and can feel like I am actively doing something about the letters. Hopefully I won't have to come on here to ask for more advise!
