How to cash USD cheque in UK

Friend has a cheque from the IRS in America after some summer work and a tax refund. She has a UK bank account but they don’t cash USD cheques any more. Is there a way around this? Google hasn’t helped so hoping someone might have encountered this before? Thanks

lots of the major high street banks still accept USD cheques. However there can be big charges so it may be worthwhile to check the fees before opening the account.

I have regularly put USD cheques into my NatWest account (I was a freelancer and clients were quite old school!). The fee varies depending on how much you're paying in, but they are reported on websites. The exchange rates are ok but nowhere near as good as an online payment exchange like Wise.

Thanks. Yes she was paid via Wise but doubt the IRS would do that. Will research NatWest.

Until about the pandemic time I had a few people paying me in cheques from the US and NatWest took them - I think I had to write on the paying in slip something - change £ to the $ etc. There is a charge. Since then almost everyone pays me by bank transfer.

I think some banks take them but you have to be a member of the bank for six months or longer so that’s not much help sorry.
