Private pensions didn’t become compulsory for majority of entities in the UK until about 2013; so a bit curious how some people started earlier? Was it government pensions?

Edited

Plenty of companies offered pension schemes decades before 2013. I got my first proper job in 2001 which was a defined contribution, is I got an employer match which was quite standard in the utility industry. Think I paid in 6% and they paid in 12% (on a very low salary though). from about 30 I think I've taken my pension very seriously, paying in 20-30% in myself at some points and having employers pay another 7-15% on average.

I'm 43 now and hoping to be able to at least semi retire in about 8-10 years. At the moment I won't be able to access any of that pension until I'm 57 at the earliest, so whilst I'm continuing to pay 7.5% with a 15% employer match I'm turning my attention to try and utilise my S&S ISA every year.

  1. I have a decent one with my job though. Dp, at 67, never started one at all nor did my siblings- I wonder how unusual that is?
