Dividing finances with partner post baby

My partner & I have always kept our finances separate, however combining & splitting bills with joint account. Post baby, my partner is covering bills & I cover baby items & groceries leaving no money for myself.

I always thought we would just share his income post baby but he would like to pay me an allowance for these items rather than offer me access to his finances for our family purchases ie baby items & groceries etc.

How do you and your families work with finances? Is this a normal procedure as we are not married?

I always wonder how money can be seperate with children.
For example if you take the children for a day out to the zoo £100 would you expect Dad to contribute if he wasn't there? Vice versa.

Now I am back at work we have individual earnings. All bills are pooled, and split according to income. This includes any and all baby items so we budget an amount each month to cover nappies, clothes, and general care. It’s split about 70/30 at the moment. Dad covers all baby classes (swimming, Hartbeeps, ballet etc) and I pay for soft play, babychinos and the like. Any big expenses like new car seat we discuss, usually dad pays but I like to put a bit in.

When I was on maternity leave my partner paid all bills and groceries, so I just had spending money really, probably had about £700 a month put aside for me from my own savings, and he would top that up with £100-£300 any given month.

We like to keep finances separate as I believe in financial independence in case we were to break up or one of us fell ill, I’d like to think we had bother protected ourselves by doing this.

Without figures it’s difficult to to say

My partner set up a standing order every week, most of the bills come out of my bank. Ideally we'd have a joint account but we just haven't got round to it
