UC and carers allowance deductions

Purplesphere11 · 10/04/2025 15:52

Asking for a friend as she doesn't have an account. She has a joiyUC claim with her husband. Husband claims carers allowance as is a full time carer to their son. They get just short of £200 a month for carers allowance but then just under £350 a month is deducted as they receive carers allowance. I can't make any sense out of it either. Can anyone advise please?

no they get approx £200 carers element, and all of the carers allowance is deducted as it’s an overlapping benefit. You are not financially better off by claiming carers allowance.

The carers element is about £185 ish extra but they deduct the full amount fo carers allowance but it looks more as carers allowance is every 4 weeks and UC monthly so the amount doesn’t match up.

Carers allowance is more than £200 a month. £83.30 a week so more than £300 amonth which is deducted £ for £ from uc.
Carers element is just under £200 and is a part of uc.

They still get paid carers allowance separately so the money deducted is just that, but it’s deducted at a monthly rate whereas they will be paid it 4 weekly so the amounts are not the same.

the carers element is actually extra

Carers Allowance (CA) is an income replacement benefit,so 'overlaps' UC and is deducted £/£ from it. It's calculated weekly at (25/6 rates) £83.30.

UC claimants who meet the criteria for CA get an extra Carer Element in their UC of £201.68/month.

Because UC is calculated monthly the deduction for Carers in UC is £83.30*52/12=£360.97.

There is no cash advantage of claiming Carers while on UC. However the fact it's paid fortnightly means some people find it helps budgeting/cash flow. It also gets Class 1 NI credits which can help with other benefits. UC gives Class 3 credits which only count for the State Pension.

nobody owes you £2700 for taking £360 away unless you didn’t actually claim carers allowance or you cancelled your claim and UC carried on making deductions which can happen. Carers allowance is not £200 that is carers element an element in UC.
