Hey all

Maternity allowance -
Is it a set / flat rate of 187 gbp gross
If someones been employed
And meets the criteria ?

( ie Employed for at least 26 weeks in the 66 weeks before due date..
And earnt at least 30 gbp for 13 of those weeks )

Does the amount of maternity allowance ever change / decrease for an employee
Or no ?

Any ' positive ' maternity allowance experiences ?

Ive read for some people payments can take a while to start.

Im aware they are given for 39 weeks
To those that have been or are Employed

Are you self employed or employed and don't qualify for SMP?

If employed its:

£184.03 a week or 90% of your average weekly earnings (whichever is less) for up to 39 weeks if you’re employed or have recently stopped working.

So you could get less than £184.03 depending what 90% of your earnings work out as.

If self employed its:

You can get between £27 to £184.03 a week for up to 39 weeks if you’re self-employed.

How much you get depends on how many Class 2 National Insurance contributions you’ve made in the 66 weeks before your baby is due.

To get £184.03 per week you must have:

  • been registered with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) for at least 26 weeks in the 66 weeks before your baby is due
  • paid Class 2 National Insurance contributions for at least 13 of the 66 weeks before the baby is due

Do you not qualify for SMP then?
Is this due to earnings or not having worked there long enough to qualify?

It will be 90% of earnings or the £187 whichever is lower. You'd submit the payslips where you earned the most so as to maximise your MA.
