Found out I’m a beneficiary of a trust. Universal credit

So I’m currently buying a house with my partner I do not live with. I’m a single parent and claim a portion of my rent and child element through universal credit alongside work.

when I got to the point of purchasing the house I found out that my family were gifting me a lump sum of money which was lovely. I’ve now gotten to the point of requesting a giftee form and it turns out that it’s not technically a gift as I’m a beneficiary. I’m not named but it falls under the category of ‘descendants’ with my mum and her sister being the beneficiaries.

im now petrified I’ve been fraudulently claiming universal credit. Does anyone have a clue?

@Dramakwe33n I'm sure lots of people work hard but on UC. But can't save enough money for a house.

And? She’s not talking about them. She’s saying she worked hard, do you not believe her or something?

Your family are rich enough to gift you a large amount of money and you’ve saved enough to buy a house and you’re on UC? How does that work?

Because her family aren’t funding her day to day.

I think we need someone like Elon to sort this lot out!

Nextdoortomeis · 02/04/2025 21:57

@Workhardcryharder I don't like that the OP is saying she works hard.
I'm sure most people work hard and would love to save up for a deposit on a house.

I just hope that the OP isn't playing the system.

😂😂😂

I do work hard, I’m not saying anyone else doesn’t work hard. I’m just defending myself when I’ve been accused of ‘playing the system’ because I claim universal credit alongside working and having a partner.

OP - it might be worth chatting to your family to see if you can have a copy of the trust deed. It’s potentially quite a big thing to have involved in your life and to have the facts available is very useful.

Eg one family DT in our family had the legendary line written by a rather hardcore Great Granny that it was only “legitimate issue” that could be beneficiaries!!

WhitegreeNcandle · 02/04/2025 22:04

Ps - well done for saving for a house and cracking on with life. Hope you’ll be very happy in your new place

Not sure I'd buy a house with someone I'd never lived with?

Quite right, and it's not a partner if your not living together and sharing bills to my mind, it's a boyfriend perhaps she chose the wrong word. But I would be terrified to buy a place with some one I hadn't lived with. How do you know you are compatible
