I would see if I had any Nectar points,
clubcard vouchers, Boots points etc for essentials. I’d sign up to Too Good To Go and other similar apps. I’d go to my local foodbank or community larder and also look for yellow sticker items in the supermarkets. I’d sell something smallish that would give me £25 or so just to tide me over.

Also - see if there are any freebies with your phone. Vodafone seem to do £1.75 Sainsburys vouchers most weeks. Spend those on yellow ticket bits.

Live off overdraft and credit cards, like most people, I guess.

Maybe, I think I'll try and talk him into it, he hates the thought of being examined by DWP..

He needs to get over himself and if there's options to receive money to support his family he needs to do it.

Dh prognosis is .... literally...
despite him.living with massive pains, they either don't know how or can't treat him, other than pain killers.
He tried to go back to work but occ health won't pass him, so we are stuck. Pending a hospital appointment but no idea when that would be and after 3 years of pain struggles I doubt it will help. He just gets more symptoms and no respite.

He usually plateaus for a bit then improves then crashes again..

Sold a few things, but nothing much worth selling.. after 3 years of on/off employment it's starting to get desperate.

What type of pain is it? If its arthritis based then there are medications which can hugely help.
Is he able to drive still on good days or is it too sudden onset? Could he look into doing something like ubereats?
If he's literally bedbound but able to use a phone then a small amount can be earned on survey sites etc (there's a MN thread somewhere with details)
And also are you using the free cashback sites for shopping? Again maybe he could do the admin for that. It's not much but could add a tiny bit to your food budget.

A few weeks ago I had a clear out and sold some stuff quickly. I sold:

  1. Old single gold earings, I had three from 29 years ago sitting in a jewelry box. Took them to the local jeweler and they gave me 70 quid on the spot.
  1. I took an old phone and tablet and camera to the CEx shop (buy sell electronics shop in the high street). Make about 200 quid.
  1. Put some old clothes on vinted, made 25 quid.

I also earned 45 quid this week doing online surveys and market research questionnaires

Some ideas for spare cash :)

If he is in that much pain then he might be eligible for pip

I get that it’s demeaning to be examined, but it’s more demeaning for your partner and child to not have enough food, warmth, clothing, etc. it sounds like you’re doing your damndest. I hope he’s not terminally ill :( that is really hard to deal with

Elisabeth3468 · 24/03/2025 23:12

Credit card? Just until you get paid

Socross2028 · 24/03/2025 23:14

I’d sell some stuff on fb marketplace (Vinted not quick enough)
eat porridge, jacket potato & beans & whatever you’ve got in the cupboard or freezer

apologies, I live somewhere with very poor connectivity and have just clocked your most recent posts.

if he is that incapacitated then he absolutely needs to apply for and strenuously pursue out of work and disablement benefits. Citizens’ Advice or a law centre will be able to help, especially if his workplace has refused him returning. He can’t just throw his hands up in the air and hope for the best. Sorry if that sounds harsh but really, this is no time for pride or helplessness.

This isn’t a Vinted/ eBay/ nectar points situation to my mind … this is a relatively long term prospect of reduced income and dependence :(
