Can anybody help me ? my brother is out of his mind with worry and I need to help him sort something out.

He is in quite a bit of debt and hasn?t paid some of his credit cards since Feb ? he did promise them all he would make payments by 6th may, and they were ok with this, but he has failed to make these payments (not his fault ? he is waiting to be paid and hasn?t yet, due to changing jobs. He is still receiving chase letters etc (but to be honest is avoiding them as he is scared).

He is petrified that he will start getting doorstep collections ? does anyone know anything about this ? when do credit card companies start making these? Do you receive a letter from a debt collection agency first, or do they immediately come to your doorstep?

I don;t know. But instead of you sorting it out, shouldnt he be down the CAB, getting some advice and facing this.

I only asked for some advice

yes he should be herts - I just wanted to get some advise for him if anyone had any.
He is planning to do that but at the moment he is finding it difficult as he isn't mobile.

I wanted to get as much info as I could for him. I know its his fault he has let it get this bad, but he needs my support and help to get out of it.

CCard companies don't usually do doorstep collections (probably get mugged!). They DO do lots of phoning & leaving messages. If they sell the debt on to a collection agency they will send letters, phone a lot.
Depending on the amount they may threaten bankruptcy/court proceedings.
Tell your brother to phone them and ask for an income/outgoings form. He can list everything he earns/spends & make a proposal for payments.
They'll usually suspend interest on the account for a while and just accept a flat amount each month

thanks for your advise Iklboo.

When are they likely to sell the debt off to a debt collector? Do you think he can avoid this until he can pay next month?

He should really ring & speak to them. They usually wait a good while before selling it on - Feb isn't really all that long ago for them.
Tell him only to offer as much as he can afford comfortably each month - don't stretch himself.
If he doesn't own his own home/car etc, tell him to stress he has no assets and they'll probably he happy with what they get.
Good luck!

he can afford to pay the full payments come June, but he cant make any payments until then. He just needs them to hold off until then.

If he's going to be able to start paying in June then he can stop worrying about how to deal with it. If they come and say who they are just say "I will only communicate by letter" and shut the door - they can't DO anything at all. He doesn't have to talk to them at all, he can just shut the door.

If he can't start paying in June then there are lots of things he can do to pay token payments. Lots of advice and support on www.debtquestions.co.uk
