Universal credit self employed and PAYE

I’ve been given the opportunity to do some freelance work for £300 a month which I’d like to do as the additional money will be very useful.

When I declare it to universal credit how does it work when you are self employed and have a PAYE job that already meets the minimum income requirements? Will I have to show that my self employed work meets the minimum income floor too (which it won’t).

I really want to take on the work but worried I’ll get in a mess with Universal Credit.

Also I know I’ll need to register as self employed and do a tax return. Is this fairly straightforward?

Thank you in advance.

Report that you are employed and self employed on your UC claim. You will be booked a Gateway interview but on the evidence will likely be found not gainfully self employed. Your Acc will be set up for you to report your self employment income monthly. If your employed earnings stay above £892 you won't need to attend appointments.

Registration with HMRC is straightforward.

the minimum income floor can be taylored to your needs also if you are caring for someone or have health conditions etc it will be less than if you had no conditions.. if you are not earning a full time wage which is the minimum wage x37 hrs they will want you to improve your earnings throughout the year and will have meetings with you every so often to see what you are doing to do this
