Car finance

I was declined car finance 2 weeks ago when I went to upgrade my car to a newer more practical for my family model. I asked vwfs why, and they said I didn’t meet their criteria and they were sorry but if I was still unhappy I could complain. It was a higher value car brand new. Disappointing and quite frankly embarrassing as I would not have crossed my mind this would be declined.
anyway, I am still super keen on this kind of car (need it for the space) and have seen some nearly new/used ones with lower monthly payments which I like.
my question is when can I apply again without destroying my credit rating (I know this stands for nothing but I’m actually proud that it’s excellent).
Does it need to be 6 months I wait? Does anyone have any advice?
thanks

Should also add this ‘hard search’ hasn’t yet shown on any of my credit score apps

I am not an expert in car finance. Could you apply for a bank loan instead?

AlexandraJJ · 05/03/2025 22:18

I thought it was 6 months

Other finance companies do not see your Hard Searches.

Hard searches only impact your mythical credit score which counts for absolutely nothing.

What matters is you have a history of paying back credit, not defaulting or arrangement to pay and so on.

As long as it is not VWFS again (as they will have the rejection on their own files) you have nothing to lose by applying again now as opposed to 6 months from now.

Look at the APR and compare it to a personal loan.

Personal loans are normally cheaper in the long run anyway.

Thanks everyone, I’ll just go for it and go again.
i PCP cars and have done for the last 10 or so years so a personal loan although cheaper wouldn’t necessarily suit.
