NHS FT v PT

Hello,

band 6 NHS currently 30 hours. Have opportunity to increase hours to FT or could go for 33.75

just wondering - other than pension contributions and obviously more pay is there any other benefit of Full time - I was wondering about annual leave. I’m pro rata now so assume no benefit but just wanted to check - possibly a silly question but seem to have a vague memory of a colleague discussing this and thinning FT staff were better off but I could be remembering this completely wrong!

thanks in advance

No advantage to Annual Leave. You can feel better or worse off due to your work pattern. My colleague worked Mon, Thu, Fri and felt worse off because she had to use leave to cover some of the Bank Holidays. I don't work Mondays and so feel like I have 'extra' leave.

A possible disadvantage is you still have to fit in the same amount of mandatory training, PDRs etc as a full time person, but that won't make a big difference.

Thanks for this, that’s super helpful.

I'm FT Band 7, 37.5 hours. There's no option for part-time in the role I do. I would love to be part-time, but I like a full-time wage, and I'm very much thinking about my pension at the moment.

yes, I was on 22.5 hours then went up to 30 when youngest started school and even 1 day was a bigger pay increase than what I thought. We are working a 37 hour week now and it’s going to 36 next April which is actually why I was asking for benefits as it’s not much more than what I’d be doing anyway.

Check it doesn’t increase you pension contribution % if you tip over into the next band. So less take home pay than you think

With the 36 hr week coming, I assume you are in Scotland, would ft put you in to the higher tax band, so limiting the advantage of ft over the 33. 75 hrs?

Thanks for flagging this -it doesn’t look to from the online calculator I looked at but will double check before I agree anything. Appreciate the advice, thank you.
