Council Tax

I pay my council tax by direct debit over 10 months so my council tax for this year is all paid. I've checked my bank account this morning and the direct debit for council tax is showing as being taken out tomorrow but there's no payment due?
Does this mean it will be taken and taken off my new bill or will it not be taken as this years council tax is paid?

Are you sure your council hasn’t moved to 12 payments?

I used to work for them. You will need to check your council tax bill sadly. The standard government legislation from when council tax started is 10 months but if you move house then it can alter the payments and take them in February and sometimes March. This is due to when the move details are processed by the council. You can miss a payment if they bill you and can't give you enough notice for the new amount to be taken by direct debit.

Some councils are now making it a 12 monthly payment schedule probably due to the cost of living to reduce the monthly payment for everyone.

As above check your bill from last year or contact the Council.

Ten installments and two 'free' months was the norm when Council Tax replaced the Poll Tax. Many authorities now allow twelve installments to ease things for hard pressed residents. I'm not aware of any who've gone to twelve as default or opt out but there are something north of 300 billing authorities across the UK and if they've got freedoms they'll use them.

My bank gives a warning about upcoming DDs but it's based on previous months so it's just assuming that the February payment will be the same as January's.
It also gives a warning about my Credit card payment using last month's amount even though the CC is with the same bank and I can clearly see the actual amount in the app.

I chose to pay in 12 installments on the last working day of each month.

That means it takes me almost 3 months extra to pay my annual bill compared with those who pay in 10 months and are done by early January.

No 'free' months but the bill is the same each month so better for budgeting and cash flow.

I've checked my online account with council tax which shows no payments due..
I'll see if it comes out tomorrow then get in touch with them
