Refund from HMRC

Hi
has anyone managed successfully to get a refund from them? I used to claim child benefit but had to repay some back. I requested it to be taken from my payslip. They lowered my personal allowance by a lot. Ok that’s fine.year after when I check it they owe me £150. I tried getting it back and their website logs you out. It says they’ll pay you in 2 weeks. I never got the money. I called them and they told me to do it via the website which again failed. Because it was that amount I thought well they can take it from next years self assessment. Not only they didn’t but they charged me again. I’ve checked today and they owe me a lot of money. I’ve requested it back and the website has failed , logged me out and when logged again I’ve a “your money will be with you in 2 weeks”. This time I really want my money back as it’s a lot and we are doing refurbishment so that money will be really helpful. I’m not claiming child benefits anymore so I’ll stop doing self assessments.
has anyone managed to recover some cash from hmrc ?

I have several times with no bother.

yes. I had mine within 10 days after submitting this year’s tax return.

yes. I had mine within 10 days after submitting this year’s tax return.

Hope I get it then in 10 days. The previous times it didn’t work. This time I’ve screenshoted the confirmation so if I don’t get it I’ll have to call them. There is no way I’m leaving that amount with them this time specially with the refurbishment going

Yes, and I've never had an issue. Are you quite sure they didn't pay it back to you by adjusting your tax code? Are you asking for a Bacs transfer and if so are your bank details correct?
Sorry OP, if these are obvious questions, just seems strange that you're having such a problem.

2021-2022. I had to pay £150. I did pay. The payment failed. I paid it again. For me to discover after that the first payment had gone thorough and they had £150 extra. Tried claiming it back. It failed
2022-2023. Through my tax code. Thought they’d deduct the £150 but they didn’t. Still have my £150
2023-2024. I owe them somehow £300 post self assessment despite I only claimed 2 months for one child and ignore the £150 they owe me. They reduce my tax code again to something quite low (8xxxL)

I have checked today and it over 1k in credit. So I want my money back.

yes bacs and details ok

I had quite a substantial rebate due after being made redundant a couple of years ago. I chatted to an agent on the chatbot because it wasn't paid 8 weeks after I submitted my tax return. The agent sorted it out and I got my money the same day, but I never found out why it was held up. Try the chatbot and see if they can help

Might try this. In 2022 I was in the phone for an hour for a lady with 0 clue about what was happening told me more or less that it should work. If in 2 weeks it’s not in my bank I’ll try it

Yes, I recently got mine for last self assessment I submitted. They were a little beyond the 10 days though, the chatbot gave me this link so I could follow through and see where they were up to with payments: https://go.hmrc.gov.uk/C805X5T4

Ah okay, they're not reducing what you owe by the credit from when you overpaid, that doesn't overly surprise me, they're not very good at that ime. I think you'll need to phone them. The tax code seems odd, have you changed jobs this year?

No I changed in 2022. The tax code I can’t remember 😂 it’s something around 8 but can’t remember the other two numbers so I’ve put here as 8xxxL. But a really low one for only owing them £160 or something like that hence why I’m not surprised that they owe me so much cash
