Any experts in Car insurance and what to put on the systems for a quote - it's a bit complicated...

I own and I am the registered keeper for 2 vehicles - Car A and Car B. I am separated and have 2 adult sons. Insurance renewal is due in April for both cars.

Car A is jointly driven by me and my eldest son who lives with me. He previously shared car B with his brother and was the main insured on that car with his brother and me as named drivers. Last year, car B was being more driven by younger son and we agreed that he could take it away to his Uni town as eldest and I were easily able to share car A. We put the insurance in DS2s name for the first time. Car A had been insured with me as the main driver with both sons as named drivers. Neither DS1 or I actually drive many miles and on balance as he used the car slightly more often, we put the insurance for car A in his name (me and DS2 as named drivers). The intention was to change it back and forward so we could both maintain our NCD as long as the situation remained around 50/50 use. DS2 has now probably driven more miles than DS1 but has no official NCD as insurance has never been in his name.

For context car A is driven for about 2k miles a year, but I'm now using it more than DS1 due to a change in his work situation.

Anyway, in July last year I was rear ended at a roundabout while driving car A. 3rd party took responsibility and everything was through the insurance company, who confirmed that their insurance accepted responsibility. 2 weeks later the police hit unoccupied car B while chasing a suspect and the car was parked in a residents space. They accepted responsibility and I'm just waiting on getting my excess returned. DS1 has a protected NCD but DS2 doesn't as he isn't old enough/held insurance in his name long enough.

Phew, long story but hopefully that is all the details. Anyway, I'm now looking to get some advance quotes for both cars next year and not really sure what to do/ who the claim sits under. As both were no fault, does that mean that they shouldn't affect either NCD and DS2 should get credited with a year or not? Does the claim for the accident I was involved in affect my or DS1s NCD?

I want to be strictly honest in my application and I don't want it cancelled because I have made a mistake when signing up.

To complicate matters DS2 should be finished in his Uni city this summer and returning home. We don't know about his or DS1s future work situations so really have no idea who will be driving most and even if we will need 2 cars....

Sorry but I'm really confused. Only one of you can earn no claims bonus on a policy.

See a broker

Honestly your best option would be to ring your current insurer and ask. You may find that until both claims are fully settled and closed ( ie all monies paid out including the return of your excess) that they'll still be treated as a claim. That certainly happened to me.

Thanks both, sorry it is complicated.

I appreciate only one can earn a NCD on a policy, however, when you are a named driver, sometimes some insurers will give you credit for that and also, you can take a break from being a policy holder for up to a couple of years and still maintain your NCD from when you were, although it doesn't get higher.

Thanks, one is with Admiral who I've found not the best to deal with tbh and the claim is still sitting as open on the website. I'm also admin on my ex's policy and (you can't make this up) he was hit last February (while we were still together) when a van reversed into him at some traffic lights and we've only just had the excess returned on that. It's also on Admiral and still sitting as open. I've no idea who he is insured with now. The other claim (for car A) was with Aviva who didn't even ask me to pay my excess so I've no idea how far that is down the road but they confirmed to me months ago that the other insurer had confirmed liability. So yes, 3 no fault accidents in one house in 6 months.
