Where is the best place to sell jewellery?

I have some jewellery I'd like to sell for some extra cash. Should I go to a jewellery shop, a pawnbrokers or an auction house. Or online? Would appreciate suggestions from posters who may have done this before.

I took some to a local independent jewellery shop. They gave me a price I was happy with. Auction is unpredictable- it may do well but it may not and either way you pay fees and vat.

Thanks.

I have some pure Gold jewelry and from abroad. So it is worth so much more then Gild from the UK. Higher purity and I have no idea where to sell as they will trybto rip me off. I have a mix of Syrian, Saudi and Moroccan Gold between 18 - 24crt

Anyone recommend a decent shop?

Independent jeweller for me. They sold the item in their shop and I got 75% and they took 25%. Just be warned, jewellery doesn’t sell for much at all. While the independent shop did get a good price, when I took the same ring valued at £1500 elsewhere, I was offered £200/£300.

Hatton Garden Metals offer a postal service and have good reviews.

BigDahliaFan · 23/02/2025 08:37

I used a local independent jeweller.

Not pawnbrokers - they’ll fleece you

if it’s high quality, auction

if you have lots of scrappy tat, a service that pays by weight

YourAmplePlumPoster · 23/02/2025 11:23

OK thanks. Differing views from everyone. Some of it is high quality.

Just managed your expectations. If you think something is worth a few grand and you sell it you may only get a few hundred pounds as an offer.

I sold high carat gold items to Hatton Garden Metals, you send it off registered post, they come back giving you a quote based on the London Gold fix price that day, you can accept or not.
If you accept you get the money in your bank account that day, if not they send it back to you. You pay for the postage there, they pay for return costs.
Used to deal with a chap called Gary, no idea if he's still there or not.
I thought their service was open and fair.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 23/02/2025 14:19

I'll check them out.

If you're selling it as jewellery, strictly speaking, it has to (by law) be hallmarked before being sold in the UK. That can only be done by a registered goldsmith who has their own hallmark.
If you're selling it as "metal" there are lots of places who buy gold at a bit below the "spot" price, but they vary hugely in what they will give you. I have worked in the trade and would recommend Hatton Garden Metals. I sold a lot of scrap gold to them over the years. They are honest and pay very quickly.
Before you take your gold to anyone, please put it on a digital scale and get the exact weight. Then look up the spot price for gold - there are lots of websites who have this onsite. That will give you an indication of the price of pure (24k) gold for that day,

That's really useful to know. Thanks.

I sold a mix of gold jewellery to Lois Bullion in the Birmingham jewellery quarter.
One bracelet was 18ct gold which I didn't know (thought it was 9ct).
They contacted me immediately to let me know and increased their offer accordingly.
Really trustworthy and funds in my account within 2 hours.

The main thing is to know the weight before you go, and remember that most of the stones will be taken off the total weight. I’ve done this a few times.

If you’re in London, try Jardna Jewellery. If you’re in Spain, you can sell it online to Joyeria Tres Reyes. Both are decent options and paid better than other places I’ve been to before.

Elektra1 · 23/10/2025 07:36

Selling jewellery you usually get about 25% of what you’d have to spend if you wanted to buy it again. Not a good way to raise cash unless you are truly desperate and the jewellery isn’t of sentimental value

thankgoditssaturday · 23/10/2025 07:42

Just get a jeweller to melt it and make it into a new item. You will always lose out selling your gold and silver
